When and where: November 19, 2019, Allen Fieldhouse, Lawrence, KS, 8:00 PM ET

The East Tennessee State Buccaneers would have to pull off one of the biggest upsets of the year to remain unbeaten in Tuesday’s tilt with the No. 4-ranked Kansas Jayhawks. After losing to Duke in the series opener, the Jayhawks outworked UNC Greensboro before going on to completely dismantle Monmouth. Meanwhile, East Tennessee is coming off wins over Newberry, UT Martin and Winthrop. It took a game-winning 3-pointer by Tray Boyd III for the Buccaneers to stay on top of Winthrop for a 61-58 victory.

Late 3-pointer seals another win for the Buccaneers

It doesn’t matter how you win as long as you win.

That seems to be the biggest takeaway from East Tennessee State’s victory over Winthrop last Thursday night. With less than a minute left on the clock, reserve guard Tray Boyd III pulled up from beyond the arc and sunk a 3-pointer to ice the game. The senior from Memphis was the only other player outside of Bo Hodges to score in double figures for the Buccaneers.

While East Tennessee State is ecstatic about the win, they know they’ll have to do much better on offense in Tuesday’s meeting with the Jayhawks. They can’t compete from a mere talent perspective. So it’s going to have to be a combination of them getting incredibly hot from the floor and playing lights out on defense.

The Team has actually been decent in defensive efficiency, but they also haven’t played an opponent that’s capable of testing their overall talent like Kansas. Hodges has been playing well on the floor, but he could be expected to play like a superstar for East Tennessee State to even have a shot at matching a Jayhawks team averaging 84.0 points per game.

Kansas is back on the winning track

After losing to Duke and playing too close for comfort against UNC Greensboro, the Jayhawks made an emphatic statement with their 112-57 win over Monmouth last Friday. It was the kind of performance reminiscent of the No. 4-ranked team in the country; the kind of performance East Tennessee State should be afraid of on Tuesday.

The Jayhawks rank 16th in the country in 3-point shooting percentage (43.1) and 36th in shooting percentage (49.7). It’s a high-scoring offense that has the means of burying a lesser team right out of the gates like they did to Monmouth. They are also holding opposing offenses to 59.5 points per game at home.

Don’t expect the Jayhawks to sleep on this match-up, especially after seeing Kentucky fall to Evansville. That game served as a wakeup call for every ranked team not to underestimate their opponent. East Tennessee State is at a disadvantage on both ends of the floor, but there’s always hope for a miracle upset.

Coach Steve Forbes has continued to do a tremendous job in his endless efforts to turn East Tennessee State into a contender. Coming off a season where the team went 24-10 overall, the Buccaneers have already put together a 3-0 record with an opportunity to go on the road and upset one of the top teams in the country.

Imagine the excitement that would ripple throughout the Volunteer State if the Buccaneers came away with a win on Tuesday. Unfortunately for East Tennessee State fans, they’ll have to table that pipe dream when the buckets start piling up for Kansas’ offense.

The team that can beat them will either have to outscore them or play well enough on defense to win in ugly fashion. East Tennessee State can’t do either.

There are some concerns with the unsettled nature of the Jayhawks’ lineup, particularly with their utilization of bigger players for better rim defense and rebounds. But it really doesn’t matter who the Jayhawks start on Tuesday, as long as guards Devon Dotson and Isaiah Moss are on the floor.

Give me the Jayhawks to pull away in the second half and hand the Buccaneers their first loss.

Prediction: Kansas Jayhawks (-14)

This feels like a buzz saw sort of trap game for East Tennessee State. They are undefeated and going on the road to face one of the best teams in the country. The Buccaneers are a far more formidable opponent than Monmouth, but it was still impressive to see some of the gaudy offensive stats to come out of that game.

By the end of regulation, the Jayhawks had mustered a 56.1 field goal shooting percentage and 112 points. They also shot 46.7 percent from 3-pointer. There is sure to be some carry-over from that breakout offensive performance in Tuesday’s game as well. I’m taking the over betting total here.
