The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles will travel to Iowa to face the Iowa State Cyclones Tuesday in non-conference basketball action. Southern Miss is 1-2 on the year while Iowa State is 2-1. These two haven't played since 2002 when Iowa State won. Iowa State is a 17 point favorite. Tipoff is Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. ET at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.

Golden Eagles in rebuilding mode

The Southern Miss has not been taking it easy in the non-conference portion of its schedule. After beating Division II Delta State in the opener, they lost to North Florida and South Alabama. Southern Miss comes into this season with a whole new cast of characters -- with 11 new players. They will have to try and replace the production of seniors Cortez Edwards, Tyree Griffin, and Kevin Holland. They qualified for the CIT last year.

FreshmanArtur Konontsuk has been a nice surprise in the early going, averaging 13.3 points per game. In both losses, they were defeated in the final minutes. The Golden Eagles have been good on the glass, out rebounding their opponents. Leonard Harper-Baker averages 10 boards per game while Boban Jacdonmi averages 8.7 per game. They have held opponents to 30.8 percent shooting from three. Southern Miss likes to take the three. They jacked 22 from deep at South Alabama. LaDavius Draine shot 46 percent from three last year, which broke the school record.

Iowa State off to great start

Life is tough in the Big 12, so when you're Iowa State, picked to finish 7th in the conference, you want to load up on non-conference wins. After losing at Oregon State, the Cyclones bounced back with a 70-52 win over Northern Illinois last time out. They were ice cold from three, going 3-for-25 from deep, but still managed to win easily. They were losing by three at half, but rolled with a big second half. The Cyclones held NIU to 18.2 percent shooting in the second half. Rasir Bolton scored 17 points to lead ISU while Solomon Young added 15 points. Michael Jacobson added nine points and 12 rebounds.

Rasir Bolton has averaged 16.5 points per game over the last two games. Also, guard Tyrese Haliburton leads the nation in assists with 10.7 per game. They are third in the country with 21.3 assists per game and second in the nation with a 2.21 assist to turnover ratio. Iowa State averages 84.7 points per game.

Take the Cyclones giving up the points. Southern Miss has been a bit of a hard-luck team, losing two very close games so far this year. But they are playing an opponent in Iowa State that is clearly out of their league. The Golden Eagles have a good program and might have given Iowa State a run for their money last year, but this is a rebuilding year for them, so they will take their lumps, especially against larger power conference foes like the Cyclones. Iowa State almost took out a very good Oregon State team on the road and beat a pretty good mid-major in NIU pretty easily despite a bad shooting night. I don't see that bad shooting continuing here, but I do see an easy win.

Prediction: Iowa State -17

Full-Game Total Pick

Rating:

Take the over. I've got to go with the over here. Southern Miss is a young team that is overmatched against Iowa State. Iowa State features one of the best point guards in the country in Tyrese Haliburton and some potent offensive weapons. Southern Miss likes to chuck, too, so don't expect them to shy away. Iowa State averages about 85 points per game and I see them coming close to that total here which easily puts this into the over. The over is 6-2 in the Cyclones last 8 games following a straight-up win and 14-6 in their last 20 games overall. Also, the over is 5-2-1 in the Golden Eagles last 8 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600
