College Basketball action on Wednesday evening and the Ohio Valley Conference will square off with the Southeastern Conference as the Morehead State Eagles rumble with the Missouri Tigers at Mizzou Arena, Columbia, Missouri. These teams last met last year and the Tigers won 75-61. The Eagles enter this game at 4-0 on the year while the Tigers are at 3-1.
Morehead State Looks To Stay PerfectMorehead State has nine regular-season conference titles and four league tournament titles in their history, but they are coming off a couple of bad seasons. The Eagles are hoping to change that after going just 12-24 the last two years in OVC play, but it will not be easy as they have been picked for 7th in the league. Still, the Eagles are 4-0 on the year and the only team left in the OVC that is unbeaten but we also have to note that they have no played anyone yet. This will be their first game against a team from a Power Five conference.
Love this team 🖤 feels good to be 4-0 💪🏽 https://t.co/J1iCuuucDF— djimon henson (@dhenson32) November 17, 2019
Returning is Jordan Walker who was 7th in the league in scoring last year putting up 15.8 ppg and he leads the team in scoring this year so far at 13.8 ppg. He scored 25 points in their opener against Samford but has scored just 10 points in each of his next three games. Morehead State will need more from him if they hope to take down the Tigers. The Eagles are off of a 76-53 home win over MD Eastern Shore and leading their attack was James Bake, who had 14 points. Djimon Henson was 2nd with 13. The Eagles shot 51.7% from the floor while holding the Hawks to just 37% shooting. The Eagles are 48th in the nation in scoring at 83.8 ppg and 51st in points allowed at 59.5 ppg. Their offense will be tested against the 17th ranked scoring defense in this one.
Tigers Are Looking For Bounce Back SeasonThe Missouri Tigers were just 15-17 overall last year, which is not horrible but they were 5-13 in league play and that is horrible. It was the 4th season in their last five that they have failed to notch more than five wins in league play. Missouri will look to get their act together this season and they are off to a 3-1 start. Their lone loss was against Xavier on the road while the beat Wofford, Northern Kentucky and Incarnate Word at home. There is not a whole lot to get excited about there and we also note that the Tigers have been pegged for 11th place in the SEC.
As I stated, Missouri has started their season at 3-1 on the year and they come in off a 75-56 home win against Wofford. The game was just a five-point lead for the Tigers at the break but they were able to wear down the Terriers in the 2nd half. The defense was the key to their win as they allowed the Terriers to hit 36.2% of their shots from the field overall, including 26.3% (6/22) of their shots from deep while also forcing 15 turnovers. The defense has been strong in the early going as the Tigers rank 11th in defensive FG% and 12th in 3-point defense while allowing just 54.2 ppg, which is 16th in the nation. It will be tested against a good Morehead State offense that has averaged 83.8 ppg so far. Leading their attack against Wofford was Mark Smith, who had 19 points while Jeremiah Tilmon was 2nd with 16. Missouri has averaged just 71.5 ppg which is 208th in the nation.
