The Georgia Southern Eagles collide with state rival Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in an inter-conference bout on Friday afternoon. The Eagles were clobbered by Wofford in their latest action. The Yellow Jackets tallied a dominating win over Charleston Southern on Monday.
Georgia Southern Charged with First Loss
The Georgia Southern Eagles head into this rivalry game on a losing note. The Eagles were tagged with their first defeat of the season after opening the season with four consecutive wins. The best win occurred in a 53-41 road victory against USF in a clash that had GASO labeled as 5.5 point dogs. The Eagles were seven-point dogs in Sunday’s rough 70-52 road loss to Wofford. They have covered in three of their four games that had a betting line.
Andrei Savrasov is clicking right now, sinking double-digits in all five games. The junior forward is going to post a career-high in points. He is averaging 13 PPG and 6 RPG. Elijah McCadden has scored exactly eight points in three consecutive games. The senior guard was one of the top players on last year’s squad and enters this one averaging 9.3 PPG on a stellar 65.2% shooting efficiency. Cam Bryant is another player with a shooting efficiency above 50% and is averaging 9.2 PPG.
The Eagles are positioned down at 227th in the country in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball ratings. They aren’t expected to be a contender in the Sun Belt this year. Georgia Southern is averaging 75.2 points, ranking them 139th overall. They are allowing an average of only 59.8 points, good for 50th in DI.
Georgia Tech Collects Fourth Straight Victory
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are in a groove. They were upset in the season opener by Miami Ohio and have rallied with four consecutive wins including an 88-78 road win over Georgia to cover the 3.5 point spread. The Yellow Jackets had no problem clobbering Charleston Southern 85-70 on Monday but didn't cover the 22 point spread. GT has covered the spread in two of their five games.
Michael Devoe was one of the top threats on last year’s squad and is in for a big season. The senior guard accumulated a remarkable 37 points in the win against Georgia and is sporting an average of 22.8 PPG and 5.8 RPG. Devoe did not play in Monday's win but is expected to suit up for this one. Jordan Usher is another experienced threat. He scored 21 in the win against Georgia and is posting 17.2 PPG accompanied by 8.4 RPG. Rodney Howard has earned one double-double this season and has filed an average of 8.2 PPG and 7.6 RPG.
The Yellow Jackets are tabled 60th in all of DI in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball ratings. They aren’t expected to be in the top half of the ACC this year but could be a dark horse team to watch for. GA Tech is scoring an average of 78.8 points, landing them 81st. They are allowing an average of 67.6 points, placing them 160th overall.
Best Bets for this Game
Full-Game Side Bet
Georgia Tech has rebounded nicely from its season opening loss with four straight victories including an 88-78 win against Georgia of the SEC. This team won the ACC Tourney last year and returns key pieces from that squad led by Michael Devoe who is averaging a dazzling 22 points on the young season.
Furthermore, Georgia Southern lost by double-digits in Wofford in their latest action. They are expected to be at the bottom of their respective Sun Belt this season. The Eagles are only averaging 95.9 points per 100 possessions while Georgia Tech is averaging 106.9 according to Ken Pomeroy’s ratings. The Yellow Jackets scoring punch will lead to a convincing win.
Full-Game Total Pick
This should be a lower-scoring battle. I expect Georgia Tech to thrive offensively once again however Georgia Southern will not. They only scored 53 against USF and 52 against Wofford. The Eagles are having success from beyond the arc but that ends here as the Yellow Jackets are limiting foes to 27.7% shooting from three-point territory.
In addition, the Georgia Southern defense has been solid. They have allowed 70 or fewer points in four of their five games. Teams are only shooting 38.1% from the field against them. The under is also 4-1 in the Eagles' last five road games.
