The Wake Forest Demon Deacons (5-0) will take on the Oregon State Beavers (1-4) Friday night in the Emerald Coast Classic. Wake Forest is 4-1 against the spread, and Oregon State is 0-5 ATS.
Beaves on four game losing streakLast season Oregon State went 20-13 and made a run all the way to the Elite 8 as a No. 12 seed. This season the Beavers entered the season rated No. 78 in the preseason CBS Sports Rankings. Oregon State was also picked to finish fourth in the Pac-12 preseason media poll behind UCLA, Oregon, and USC.
After opening the season with a 73-64 win over Portland State, the Beavers have lost to Iowa State 60-50, Tulsa 64-58, and back-to-back one-point losses falling to Samford 78-77 and Princeton 81-80. Three players have dominated the production. Warith Alatishe, a 6'8 senior, leads the team with 12.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, followed by 6'10 senior Maurice Callo (12.8 ppg, 4.5 rebs) and 6'4 junior Jarod Lucas (11 ppg).
Demon Deacons going for sixth straight winThe Wake Forrest Demon Deacons went 6-16 last season. Even with three returning starters from last year, the Demon Deacons still are expected to struggle this season as they were selected to finish 13th in the ACC Preseason Poll. CBS Sports slated Wake Forest at No. 113 in the nation in the Preseason Rankings.
The Demon Deacons haven't played the toughest schedule, but they have taken care of business winning each of their first five games by at least 12 points or more. Most recently Wake Forest blowout Kennesaw State 92-61 on Tuesday. Jake LaRavia a 6'8 junior led the team with 19 points, seven rebounds, and six assists in the win. LaRavia is third on the team averaging 14.2 ppg, followed by Alondes Willams with 19.5 ppg, and Daivien Williamson with 15 ppg.
Best Bets for this Game
Full-Game Side Bet
Wake Forest is undefeated, but according to KenPom, they have only faced the 356th most difficult schedule out of 368 teams. The Beavers are off to a rough start, but they are not less talented than Wake Forest and have played a more challenging schedule so far. Oregon State is coming off of back-to-back heartbreaking one-point upset losses, while Wake Forest has been cruising. Expect the Beavers to be prepared for another tough game, and cover the spread against the Demon Deacons who are yet to be tested.
Full-Game Total Pick
The total in this game looks a little too low. Wake Forest is averaging 87.6 ppg and is third in the nation shooting 53.6% from the floor, and 29th knocking down 40.2% of their threes. On defense, the Demon Deacons are allowing 63.4 ppg, and the over has cashed in four of their five games. Oregon State has played to the over in its last two games, combining for 155 points with Samford and 161 points with Princeton. I will take this game to go over as well.
