The Rutgers Scarlet Knights will take on the Massachusetts Minutemen in an inter-conference battle on Saturday afternoon. The Scarlett Knights were dealt a disappointing loss by Lafayette in their latest clash. The Minutemen tallied a win against UMASS Lowell on Wednesday. These foes last met in 2019 in a game Rutgers won 82-57.

Rutgers Tagged with Second Consecutive Defeat

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are in need of a win. They have been tagged with back-to-back losses. First, they dropped a 73-70 road decision to DePaul and were large 19.5 point favorites in a 53-51 home loss to Lafayette. The shooting has been abysmal as they rank near the bottom in most offensive categories. Rutgers has yet to cover the spread in its five games on the season.

Ron Harper Jr. has yet to find a groove. The senior forward has collected four double-doubles but has been inconsistent offensively. He is averaging 15.8 PPG on a poor 39% mark from the field. Cliff Omoruyi has been the best player so far. The sophomore center has connected on at least 50% of his field goals in all five games and features an average of 11.4 PPG and 7.6 RPG. Geo Baker only netted three points in the loss to Lafayette. The senior guard owns an average of 11.4 PPG and 4 APG.

The Scarlet Knights are positioned 92nd in the country in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball ratings. The offense has been awful and they are only averaging 63.4 points on the year, pegging them 310th in DI. The defense has been solid, allowing an average of only 58.4 points, good for 33rd in all of DI.

Minutemen' Scoring Barrage Continues in 92 Point Output

The Massachusetts Minutemen are aiming for its first two-game winning streak of the season. There’s been a few disappointing losses in games the Minutemen were favored including a 20 point loss to Yale. They also have an upset win on the resume, beating Penn State 81-56. The Minutemen were 9.5 point favorites in a 92-81 home win over UMass Lowell on Wednesday night. They have covered in just three of their seven games on the year.

Noah Fernandes did not suit up in Wednesday’s victory and is questionable. The junior guard is playing well. He scored 25 points in a recent win and is posting a team-leading 15.2 PPG Trent Buttrick is also producing. The senior forward transferred from Penn State in the offseason and has made the most of his increased playing time. Buttrick scored 11 in Wednesday’s victory and is averaging 15.1 PPG. T.J Weeks is a veteran on this squad. The sophomore guard is averaging 9.4 PPG and 5.3 RPG. Rich Kelly is producing. He scored 11 last time out and is third in team scoring with 11.4 PPG.

The Minutemen are currently ranked 120th in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings and stand at a perfect 3-0 on their home court including the win over Penn State. UMASS is averaging 81.9 points, good for 49th in DI. They are conceding an average of 79.3 points, landing them down at 328th overall.

Full-Game Side Bet

Insiders Status:

Rating:

The Scarlet Knights are playing abysmal basketball right now. They have lost two straight to DePaul followed by an ugly loss to Lafayette in a tilt that had Rutgers favored by 19.5 points. The shooting is horrible. They rank 343rd with a 37.4% mark from the field on the season.

Furthermore, UMASS has been terrific in the offensive end. They are sporting a dazzling 38.1% efficiency from three-point range and have scored at least 80 points in three consecutive games including 92 last time out. The defense is questionable but it’s not a big concern considering Rutgers' terrible offensive slump.

Prediction: UMass Minutemen -1

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Rating:

I expect this total to go over. The Minutemen play at a faster pace and are averaging 60 field goal attempts per game which is above the average. They also attempt an average of 28.9 threes per game which is one of the highest tallies in DI.

In addition, while I expect UMass to contain Rutgers, they will have their chances considering the Minutemen's faster pace of play. UMass has squandered at least 80 points in four straight games. It’s no coincidence the over is a perfect 4-0 in that span.

Prediction: Over 137

Full-Game Prop Bet

Insiders Status:

Rating:

I expect another strong output from the Minutemen. As mentioned they attempt a ton of threes with success. DePaul was able to 38% from three-point territory against Rutgers and Lafayette was able to connect on 39% of their threes. Also, UMASS has averaged 80 points at home.

Prediction: UMass Team Total Over 68.5

Half-Time Side Pick

Insiders Status:

Rating:

I like UMAS on the halftime line as well. Rutgers has no confidence right now and is really struggling to score in the first half where they rank 308th with an average of 27.4 points. UMASS is averaging a stellar 35.1 points in the opening half.

Prediction: UMass +1
