Eastern Michigan has had a tough start to the season and they look to double their win total facing a UC San Diego team that only has two wins.

UC San Diego is only 2-4 but they are coming off a win, which was on the road. They put up a season high 75 points in their last game but scoring has been an issue early this season for a squad that is only averaging 64.7 ppg.

After winning their first game of the season Eastern Michigan has fallen off the cliff losing their last five games. They gave up over 100 points in their last game and their D has been the big issue in the losses since they are giving up an average of 85 ppg. The Eagles come into this game as a 4.5-point favorite with a total of 147.5.

Blowing Out of the Gates

In their last game UC San Diego was on the road beating George Washington 75-70 where they outscored the Colonials by 16 points in the first half. For the game the Tritons shot a solid 51.9% from the floor, were hot from deep with a 3-pt FG% of 47.1%, and they held George Washington to 45.6% shooting. Only one UCSD player scored in double figures in the win in Bryce Pope, but he went big with 31 points on 11/16 shooting. The Tritons covered the spread as a 7.5-point underdog and they had failed to cover the spread in the previous two games.

Pope (19.2 ppg) is one of two players for UC San Diego that is averaging in double figures and he bounced back from his worst game of the season (7 points on 30% shooting) before going for a season high 31 points. 7’ C Emmanuel Tshimanga is averaging 10 ppg and 5.4 rpg and while he does have 16 rebounds over the last two games, he scored eight points in each and he did not have any blocks in the last game after five the previous one. Francis Nwaokorie (6.6 ppg 6 rpg) is the leading rebounder on the season and he has pulled down five boards in each of the last three games.

Can’t Stop the Other Eagles

Eastern Michigan was on the road in their last game facing another Eagles team and in the 101-87 loss they could not stop them from scoring the pill. EMU allowed an FG% of 65.4% and allowed Winthrop to shoot 54.5% from 3-pt land (12-22) while they shot 42.5% and 34.6% from deep. Eastern Michigan lost by 14 points even though they had 19 offensive rebounds while only giving up five. Every starter for EMU scored in double figures led by Tyson Acuff with 25 points and Noah Farrakhan had 17 points but was only 6/22 from the floor. EMU failed to cover as a 1-point underdog and they have failed to cover in three of the last four games including the last two.

Emoni Bates (20 ppg 5 rpg) is one of three players averaging at least 12 ppg and he has struggled with his shot in the last two games totaling 31 points and he fouled out of the last game. Farrakhan (13 ppg) has been up and down as of late in the scoring department but he is only shooting 39.2% from the floor on the season. Acuff (12 ppg) had a season went for a season high 25 points in the last game after failing to score in double figures in two of the previous three games.

Full-Game Side Bet

Insiders Status:

Eastern Michigan has lost five in a row and in their last game gave up over 100 points where their opponent shot 65.4% from the floor. UC San Diego is coming off their first road win of the season and they almost won their first road game losing to Navy in overtime. They will not be intimated on the road in this game since they shot over 47% from deep in their last game and will be facing a struggling Eagles team. Eastern Michigan is not playing with confidence and their leading scorer, who is averaging over 20 ppg, has failed to shoot over 40 in the last two games where he has totaled 31 points. The Tritons are not a powerhouse but will be facing a reeling EMU team and they will, at least, cover the spread.

Prediction: UC San Diego +4.5

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

I am leaning towards the Over in this game and the main reason is the Eastern Michigan defense. They are giving up an average of 85 ppg and they gave up 101 points in their last game allowing their opponent to shoot 65.4% from the floor. UCSD is not a high scoring team but they had a good shooting game in their last one, which was on the road. They will get their points in this game and EMU will as well, as they will press the envelope on offense, as they need to get a win. Look for a higher-paced and high scoring game in this non-conference affair, which is why the Over is the pick.

Prediction: Over 147.5
