The Temple Owls will aim for their second straight win when they host the Detroit Mercy Titans in an inter-conference clash Friday night from the Liacouras Center. Detroit went 8-24 last season, and they dropped an 89-76 decision to Western Michigan in their season opener. The Owls posted a 17-16 record last season, and they recorded a 75-67 home win over La Salle in their home opener.
Rebuilding Titans Fall to Western Michigan
The Detroit Mercy Titans remain in a rebuilding mode this season. They lost three out of their top four scorers which includes Kameron Chatman (17.8 PPG). Detroit opened their season with an 89-76 road loss to Western Michigan on Tuesday night. Antoine Davis was spectacular in the defeat, sinking 32 points on a 6 for 14 effort from three-point range. The freshman guard is the son of Titans’ head coach Mike Davis. The Titans return Josh McFolley who is expected to carry the load offensively. The senior guard averaged 11.1 points on 40% shooting last season after posting 13.8 points in the 2016-2017 season. McFolley recorded 14 points in the Titans’ season-opening loss. Detroit will be counting on Gerald Blackshear Jr. this season. The senior forward is entering his fourth season with the Titans. He only averaged 2.6 points in very limited playing time last season, and he scored eight points along with 10 boards in Tuesday’s loss.

The Titans are a young rebuilding team that is going to struggle to win games with any consistency this season. They were ranked to finish in last place in the 10 team Horizon League in the preseason poll. Detroit averaged a solid 78.6 points last season, ranking them 60th in the country. They struggled defensively last year, allowing an average of 85.7 points, placing them at the bottom at 347th overall.
Owls Open Season with Win Over La Salle
The Temple Owls played sharp defense in their 75-67 home win over La Salle in their season opener on Tuesday night. While Temple only shot 38.6% from the field, there were plenty of positives. Nate Pierre-Louis was tremendous, accumulating 14 points along with 13 rebounds. The sophomore guard had an encouraging 2017-2018 freshman campaign that saw him average 7.5 points on 46% shooting. Temple features two talents that are capable of taking over a game in Shizz Alston Jr. and Quinton Rose. Both players averaged over 13 points last season, and they could be in for a big season. Rose was stellar in the season-opener, sinking 15 points on a 50% shooting performance. Shizz Alston Jr. only shot 40% last season, and he wasn’t sharp in Tuesday’s victory, netting 13 points on a poor 3 for 13 mark from the field. The senior guard averaged 13.3 points last season.

Temple was selected to finish in sixth place in the AAC preseason coaches poll. Temple was very inconsistent last season and they will need more consistent play from the duo of Quinton Rose and Shizz Alston Jr. this season. The Owls were not a high-scoring team last year, averaging only 69.9 points, ranking them down at 268th in the country. They allowed an average of 70.5 points last year, placing them 126th overall.
The Temple Owls are:
- 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up win.
- 7-1 ATS in their last 8 Friday games.
- 9-4-1 ATS in their last games overall.
The Detroit Titans are:
- 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up loss.
- 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
I am taking Temple in this contest. Detroit lost three out of their top four scorers from last season, and they are a very poor defensive team. Detroit was one of the worst defensive teams in the country last season as they conceded an average of 85.7 points, and their defense will again be a major weakness. They surrendered 89 points to Western Michigan in their season-opener on Tuesday, and Temple features two big scorers in Shizz Alston Jr. and Quinton Rose who should both put up big points in this one.
Prediction: Temple Owls
Full-Game Total Pick
The over is a strong play in this matchup. Opponents shot 48.2% against Detroit last season, and they allowed Western Michigan to shoot 47% in their season opener. Temple should feast on Detroit in this one. Also, the over is 11-4 in the Owls’ last 15 home games following a straight up win.
In addition, Detroit was able to score 76 points against Western Michigan, and they are an offensive minded team up against an mediocre defensive Temple team, plus the over is 5-1 in Detroit’s last six games overall.
Full-Game Prop Bet
Temple should feast on Detroit in this one. Detroit squandered 89 points against Western Michigan in their season opener, and they could be one of the worst defensive teams in the country this season. They ranked near the bottom of the country in several defensive categories last season, and the same issues will plague them this year.
Prediction: Temple Team Total: Over
Half-Time Side Pick
This is a game Temple should control early against an awful defense. Detroit surrendered 45 points in the first half in their season opener, and last season they conceded an average of 42 points in the first half. In addition, the Owls held opponents to 32.9 points in the first half last season.
Prediction: Temple -10.5
