The Stanford Cardinal will head on the road to take on the UNC Wilmington Seahawks in a non-conference battle Friday night from the Raiford G. Trask Coliseum. The Cardinal posted a 19-16 record last season and they tallied a 96-74 home win over Seattle in their season opener on Tuesday night. The Seahawks went 11-21 last season, and they are coming off a 97-93 overtime road loss to Campbell in their season opener.
Stanford Cruises to First Win of Season
The Stanford Cardinal opened their season with an easy 96-74 home win over Seattle on Tuesday night. KZ Okpala had a big night in the win, sinking 29 points on 8 for 12 shooting. Okpala is expected to contribute in a big way offensively this season. The 6-foot-9 sophomore forward posted an average of 10 points and 3.7 rebounds last year, although he will need to improve on his 39% field goal efficiency. The Cardinal lost their top two scorers from last season, although they still return solid scoring punch. Daejon Davis is expected to take a giant leap forward this season after a promising rookie season. The sophomore guard averaged 10.7 points on 47% shooting, and he contributed in all areas with an average of 4.4 boards and 4.8 assists per game. Davis netted 15 points in Tuesday’s victory.

Marcus Sheffield returns after sitting out last season. The junior guard had an encouraging 2016-2017 season as he posted 6.7 points in an average of only 19 minutes of playing time. Sheffield scored 10 points in the Cardinal’ season opener. Stanford was picked to finished in 9th place in the PAC 12 in the preseason media poll. The Cardinal averaged 75.9 points per game last season, placing them 110th overall. They allowed an average of 74.9 points, positioning them 244th in the country.
UNCW Falls to Campbell in Season-Opener
The UNC Wilmington Seahawks will look to rebound from a tough 97-93 overtime road loss to Campbell in their season opener. The Seahawks have plenty of scoring punch which was evident in Tuesday’s defeat. Ty Taylor II had a big night on Tuesday, accumulating 29 points including six three-pointers. The junior guard averaged 13.6 points on 39% shooting last season, and he should improve on that total this season. UNCW also returns last year’s leading scorer Devontae Cacok. The 6-foot-7 senior forward started his season off strong with a 19 point performance along with 13 rebounds. Cacok is one of the best players in the CAA. He averaged 17.7 points and 13.5 rebounds per game last season, and he was named to the CAA preseason all-conference team in the coaches and media poll.

UNCW was voted to finish in fifth place in the 10 team CAA conference in the preseason poll, and they will improve on last season’s 11 win total. The Seahawks had no problem scoring points last year, averaging 79.4 points, pegging them 53rd in the nation, and scoring will be a strength this season. Defense was an issue last year as they squandered an average of 83.4 points, placing them at the bottom at 342nd overall.
The UNC Wilmington Seahawks are:
- 3-14 ATS in their last 17 non-conference games.
- 0-6 ATS in their last 6 Friday games.
- 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games following an ATS loss.
The Stanford Cardinal are:
- 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
- 5-1 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games.
- 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games following a straight up win.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Stanford should be able to come through with a decisive win in this matchup. UNC Wilmington lost 97-93 to Campbell in their season opener, and their poor defense will hurt them in this one. Stanford accumulated 96 points on 51% shooting in their 96-74 season-opening win over Seattle, and they feature two talented players in KZ Okpala and Daejon Davis who should have their way against this defense. Opponents shot just under 48% against the Seahawks last season, and I expect Stanford to pour on the points in this one.
Prediction: Stanford Cardinal
Full-Game Total Pick
This contest should yield plenty of scoring. The Seahawks are an offensive-minded team who averaged 79.4 points last season, and they return their leading scorer Devontae Cacok, plus the over is 4-0 in their last four games following an ATS loss.
In addition, the Cardinal shot a stellar 51% in their season opener, and they are up against a poor defensive UNCW squad. The Seahawks were one of the worst defensive teams in the country last season, and defense will be an issue this season as well. The over is 12-2 in the Seahawks’ last 14 non-conference games, and it should convert in this one.
Full-Game Prop Bet
The over on the Stanford team total is a solid play. Stanford looked good in their season opener with 96 points against Seattle, and they are up against a poor defensive team that plays in an inferior conference. In addition, the Seahawks allowed an average of 80.7 points on their home court last season.
Prediction: Stanford Team Total: Over
Half-Time Side Pick
I am taking the points with UNCW on the first half line. This is the Seahawks home opener and they averaged a solid 78 points in the first half last season. In addition, UNCW was able to score 39 points in the first half in their season opener, and they averaged 37.2 points in the first half last season.
Prediction: UNCW +1.5
