The Santa Clara Broncos will host the Sacramento State Hornets in non-conference play Saturday evening from the Leavey Center. The Hornets were dealt a 62-59 road loss to Cal State Fullerton in their previous game, and the Broncos posted a dominating 71-52 home win against California in their latest action. These teams last met in 2008.

Sacramento State Eyes Third Straight Win

The Sacramento State Hornets have won six of their seven games on the season led by stifling defensive play. Their lone loss took place on the road against a ranked Colorado squad and they have countered that defeat with two straight wins. The Hornets were 1.5 point favorites in a 62-59 road win at Cal State Fullerton in their latest action.

Joshua Patton has seen his playing time dip recently and as a result, he has scored seven or fewer points in three straight games. The senior center leads the team with 13 PPG on a dazzling 61% clip from the field.

Ethan Esposito posted a season-best 16 points in the win over Cal State Fullerton. The junior forward has shot below 43% in each of his last three games and is averaging 10.9 PPG and 6.7 RPG. Bryce Fowler has scored a combined 22 points in his last three games. The junior guard is contributing in all areas and he owns an average of 10.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.

The Hornets are positioned 202nd overall in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball ratings, and they stand at 2-1 on the road. Sacramento State is not a high scoring team, averaging only 65 points on the season, pegging them down at 303rd in the country. They are limiting opponents to only 50.4 points, good for third in all of DI.

Santa Clara Defeats California

The Santa Clara Broncos have been sharp in both ends of the court in their winning ways this season. They rebounded from a loss to Nevada with a decisive 71-52 home win against California in their latest action last Saturday to cover the 4.5 point spread. Their only other defeat this season occurred on the road against Stanford. Santa Clara does not rely on one single player and spread their scoring around nicely.

Guglielmo Caruso is having an outstanding season, sporting a dazzling 70% clip from the field and he leads the team with 16 PPG. The sophomore forward out of Italy has tallied two double-doubles this season. Trey Wertz scored 10 points in the win against California. The sophomore guard is shooting a solid 45.7%, and he is posting 11 PPG. Josip Vrankic is consistently producing, shooting at least 50% in four out of his last five games. The junior forward stand fourth in team scoring with 9.4 PPG.

The Broncos are currently ranked 131st in the country in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball ratings, and they feature a perfect 9-0 home record. Santa Clara is averaging a terrific 78.5 points, placing them 62nd in DI. They are playing strong defense and are holding opponents to 65.6 points, placing them 125th overall.

Best Bets for this Game

Full-Game Side Bet

Insiders Status:

I am taking the points with Sacramento State in this one. Sacramento State is looking good, winning six of their seven games on the season with their lone defeat occurring on the road against Colorado. The Hornets are playing stifling defense, allowing 59 or fewer points in six of their seven games, and so I expect them to contain Santa Clara.

Furthermore, Santa Clara has cooled down offensively recently, averaging only 69.3 points in their last three games. Lastly, Sacramento State has a rebounding advantage. They are averaging 37 rebounds per game compared to 34.8 from Santa Clara.

Prediction: Sacramento State Hornets

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

I am opting for the under in this one. The Hornets' defensive play has been remarkable. They are limiting opponents to 33.4% shooting which is the third-best mark in DI, plus they play at a slow pace with only 68.4 possessions per game which is down at 309th in the country. The under is 4-1 in the Hornets’ last five games overall.

In addition, Santa Clara is also playing stellar defense. They have conceded 55 or fewer points in two out of their last three games, and Sacramento State is a low scoring team that is only averaging 65 points. The under is 13-4 in the Broncos’ last 17 home games.

Prediction: Under

Full-Game Prop Bet

Insiders Status:

The under on the Santa Clara team total offered on PointsBet is a recommended play. The Broncos have shot below 44% in their last two games. Sacramento State also defends the three exceptionally well. Opponents are only shooting 21.3% from deep against the Hornets and they should contain a Santa Clara team that has been mediocre from three-point range this season.

Prediction: Santa Clara Team Total Under

Half-Time Total Bet

Insiders Status:

I am sticking with the under on the halftime total. Sacramento State is one of the lowest-scoring teams in the country in the first half where they are only averaging 24.4 points, pegging them down at 349th overall. Moreover, they are one of the best defensive teams in DI in the first half. They are limiting opponents to 23.4 points in the first half which is the third-best in the country.

Prediction: Under
