DePaul hosts Northwestern on Saturday afternoon at Wintrust Arena. Both teams come in at 6-4, but the Wildcats have yet to win a game on the road. Granted, both those road trips were close defeats at Georgia Tech and Purdue. The Blue Demons are currently riding a five-game winning streak.
Wildcats back to tougher competition after sleeper against Chicago State
Northwestern faced a nobody in their last game, but looking back at a three-game stretch that featured Power Five opponents, they went 1-2. The lone win was a home game against Illinois in overtime. The Wildcats have a significant +7.5 point differential on average this season. They shoot the ball more efficiently than their opponent, but aren’t as solid on the glass. Both teams average an identical 14.4 assists per game.
The most recent defeat was against Purdue back on December 3rd, 74-69. Purdue had a double-figure lead early on, but that morphed into a close contest until the very end where the Boilermakers finally pulled away. Junior center Dererk Pardon (11.7 ppg) has had 23 points and 16 boards over his last two games including the blowout over Chicago State. Junior forward Vic Law (13.7 ppg, 5.7 rpg) had a double-double featuring 12 points and 10 boards against Purdue.
Blue Demons have another tough challenge against Big Ten opponent
DePaul has racked up five consecutive wins, but the toughest competition in that stretch? Perhaps Illinois-Chicago, 65-55. Otherwise, it certainly wasn’t the level of competition they saw in their losing skid that featured Illinois, Michigan State, and Oregon. The latest win was against Alabama A&M, 83-59. The contest was pretty much over from the start as they jumped to a 25-5 lead in the first half and never looked back.
Junior guard Max Strus (15.3 ppg) has delivered the most offense in recent games. He had 14 points in 27 minutes of action against Alabama A&M, which was enough to lead the team as scoring was distributed fairly evenly, but he’s registered 20 or more points in three of his last five games. While he had a tough showing from downtown, nailing just 3-of-12 against UIC, he was better making 2-of-6 against A&M.
- 4-1 ATS in their last 5 against Big East
- 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games on Saturday
- 6-21 ATS in their last 27 games on Saturday
- 0-6 ATS in their last 6 against Big Ten
The Wildcats may be coming off a simple opponent, but they are well tested for this game. Expect Pardon to continue putting up offense while the winning streak will snap for the home team.
