Cal State Fullerton heads to Cal to take on the Golden Bears on Saturday night. The Titans bring a surprising 6-3 record into the contest and have won five straight games, including a 91-83 win over Utah Valley in their latest. They now take on a Cal team who has already lost to a Division II team this year in Chaminade. I would have given them very little shot in this game before the season, but they are the better team right now.
Cal will bring a 4-6 record into the contest, although they are coming off of a 63-62 win over San Diego State that broke their two game losing streak. Wyking Jones is in his first year and has encountered some growing pains to be sure, but they have played better in their last few games. They lost to a tough St. Mary’s team by nine points and beat San Diego State, although they did lose to Central Arkansas by 27 between those two.
Fullerton beats Utah Valley
Cal State Fullerton extended their winning streak to five games when they beat Utah Valley on Saturday. This will give them a full week off in between games, but they don’t really need it as they have been playing some very good basketball. They actually only led by one point at halftime over the Wolverines, but were able to pull away late in the second half of the 91-83 win.
The Titans were led by Khalil Ahmad who had an absolutely monster game for Fullerton. He scored a career high 34 points, making 11 of 20 from the field and both six three pointers and six from the charity stripe. He added four rebounds, an assist, and two steals for a great all around game.
Cal gets a needed win
Cal got a much needed win on Saturday, but it wasn’t easy. They blew a 14 point lead before rallying late and beating San Diego State 63-62. Juhwan Harris-Dyson made two free throws with 7.8 seconds left and Cal’s defense didn’t let the Aztecs score in the final seconds. It ended a two game losing streak for the Bears and gave them only their fourth win on the year.
The Bears haven’t been very good this year, but Don Coleman has been a revelation. The junior guard who had been in the shadow of others for the last several years is averaging over 20 points per game, along with 3.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists. If Cal is going to improve, they will be riding the back of Coleman, but a cellar finish is probably most likely for this regrouping team.
The Cal State Fullerton Titans are:
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a losing home record.
- 0-5 ATS in their last 5 vs. Pacific-12.
The Cal Bears are:
- 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up win.
Cal has been up and down this year (mostly down), but they have thrown in a few good games as of late and I think they might just play well on Saturday.
