FAU takes on St. Bonaventure in a non-conference matchup on Monday night in the Boca Raton Beach Classic. Both teams have won two straight games coming into this contest.

Welch leads Bonnies over San Diego

Dominick Welsh scored 16 point, while Osun Osunniyi added 15 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks to lead St. Bonaventure over San Diego, 70-61 on Sunday night in the Boca Raton Classic. Basketball is a game of runs and the Bonnies had a 13-2 run that pushed them over the top early in the second half to make it 55-46. The Bonnies made 47.4% from the field and outrebounded the Toreros, 36-23. San Diego didn't help themselves by making just 5-of-11 from beyond the arc, but they did stay in the game with solid three-point shooting (10-23).

Kyle Lofton, a 6-3 sophomore guard, leads the Bonnies with 13.1 points and 5.1 assists per game. He's scored in double figures in six straight games and has played in 40 minutes in four of their seven games. St. Bonaventure had some tough losses at home to Vermont (61-59) and Ohio U. (65-63) and also fell at Canisius (61-57). Their weakness is on offense as they are averaging just 62.9 points per game (301st) on 39.3% shooting (317th) and 29.2% from beyond the arc (301st). Defensively, they are strong, allowing just 64.4 points per game on 41.9% shooting (30.4% 3pt).

Owls sneak past Illinois-Chicago

Unlike the Bonnies, FAU had a much more difficult time in their matchup against UIC on Sunday night. The Owls needed a game-tying three-pointer from Jailyn Ingram and a free throw from Karlis Silins to give them the win in a very tight game, 71-70. Cornelius Taylor led the Owls with 19 points, while Ingram added 10 and six boards. FAU hurt themselves with 20 turnovers, though the Flames had 19 in a sloppy affair. The Owls shot 41.5% from the field but 12-of-25 (48%) from beyond the arc. They also outrebounded the Flames by six.

Taylor, a 6-0 freshman guard, leads the Owls with 12.7 points per game, while Michael Forrest adds 9.9 points on 43.5% shooting (45.2% 3pt). FAU struggles defensively, as they've allows 74.7 points per game on 46.2% shooting (35.8% 3pt). Offensively, they are averaging 74.7 points on 42.6% shooting (34.9% 3pt). FAU is 4-0 at home this year but has lost all three on the road to Florida Gulf-Coast (72-70ot), Alabama (78-59) and Miami (74-60).

Does this make sense? FAU is the road team? Sure, I had them as the home team because they are playing at home, but the Bonnies are listed as the road team in the rotation schedule. St. Bonaventure plays better defense, but this is a road game for them and their starting point guard just played 40 minutes the night before. The Bonnies also struggle to score and that will be their downfall tonight against FAU.

Prediction: FAU +4

St. Bonaventure is one of the slowest-paced teams in the nation at 338, with 66.5 possessions per game. FAU is ranked 97 but they scored just 59 against Alabama and 60 against Miami. Those are pretty good defensive teams. The Bonnies might not be that good, but they'll slow the tempo down because they are not capable of playing that fast.

Prediction: Under 124
