College Basketball action on Thursday evening and Conference U.S.A will square off with the Atlantic Coast Conference as the Charlotte 49ers grapple with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. The 49ers enter this game off a 72-64 road loss to Charleston, while the Demon Deacons are off an 84-74 road loss to Richmond.
Charlotte Needs To Find Their Offense
The Charlotte 49ers went 6-23 overall last year, including 2-16 within Conference USA and they could be in store for another long season. The 49ers have just two of five starters back from last year and very little depth. They come in having lost four of their first six games and their big problem in the early going has been the offense as you can see from the stats below. The 49ers averaged 71.2 ppg last year, but are well below that this year so far, especially of late as they have averaged 55.2 ppg over their last four games. Yikes. Charlotte is off a 74-62 loss to Charleston on the road and leading their attack in the game was Jon Davis (20.3 ppg), who had 21 points, while Malik Martin (10.3 ppg) had 14 and Dravon Mangum (8.7 ppg) had 12. The 49ers shot just 42.9% from the field overall while allowing Charleston to hit 44.4 of their shots.
RECAP – 49ers had 3 players in double-figures led by 21 points from Jon Davis. The 49ers connected on a season-high 10 threes but 49ers fall in a tightly contested game on the road at College of Charleston.

The 49ers enter this game ranked 344th in the nation in scoring at 59.3 ppg, while also ranking 321st in shooting (39.8%), 300th in three-point shooting (29.7%) and 2nd in free throw shooting (81.3%). On defense, they are 63rd in points allowed, giving up 65.8 ppg, while also ranking 218th in defensive FG% (44.2%) and 230th in three-point defense (34.6%).
Deacons Fall By 10 To The Spiders On The Road
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons are off to a mediocre start as they have gone 4-3 through their first seven games after going just 11-20 last year, including 4-14 within the ACC. Wake has just one starter back from that team and they have been picked for 13th in the ACC, so they could be in line for another long season this year. Wake enters this contest off a 74-64 loss to the Richmond Spiders on the road and they have now lost two of their last three games. Wake hit 47.3% of their shots from the field, including 36.4% of their shots from long range, which are not bad numbers. The problem was that they allowed Richmond to hit 53.6% of their shots from the field overall and lost the turnover battle 14-2. Hard to win a game when you force just two turnovers. Leading their attack in the game was Brandon Childress (17.4 ppg) and Isaiah Mucius (9.1 ppg), who each had 17 points, while Chaundee Brown (9.7 ppg) had 16.

The Demon Deacons enter this game ranked 164th in the nation in scoring at 75.7 ppg, while also ranking 200th in shooting (44.6%), 40th in three-point shooting (39.1%) and 73rd in free throw shooting (73.2%). On defense, they are 263rd in points allowed, giving up 75.7 ppg, while also ranking 270th in defensive FG% (45.3%) and 299th in three-point defense (36.9%).
Wake Forest is:
- 11-25 ATS in their last 36 Thursday games
- 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record
- The Under is 3-1-1 in 49ers last 5 vs. the Atlantic Coast
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The 49ers don’t have a great team, but neither do the Demon Deacons, who do have a loss at home to Division Two Houston Baptist on their resume. The Demon Deacons will be in for another long year and the feeling is that they will not be able to blow out many teams on their schedule this year. That includes the Charlotte 49ers.
Prediction: Charlotte +11
Full-Game Total Pick
I will look for this one to go Under the total. The 49ers can’t score a lick at all right now as they have averaged just 55 ppg over their last four games and it will be their pathetic offense that will keep this one from going Over the total. The Under is 3-1-1 in Charlotte’s last five vs. the Atlantic Coast and 4-1 in Wake Forest’s last five games following a straight up loss, plus 3-0-1 the last four games in this series.
Prediction: Under 135.5
Half-Time Side Pick
The 49ers are not a good team, but they have a shot at pulling the upset in this one. They have the defensive edge and the Demon Deacons will not have the capability of blowing many teams out this year. Look for this one to be tight throughout.
Prediction: Charlotte +5.5
Half-Time Total Bet
I like the Under for the game but will take the Over in the first half. The 49ers have struggled to score this year, but they have averaged 28.5 ppg in the first half on the road, while Wake has averaged 39.3 ppg at home in the first half. Take the Over in the first half of this one, but still look for the Under to cash for the whole game.
Prediction: Over 63.5
