The Purdue Boilermakers will host the #23 Maryland Terrapins in Big Ten action Thursday night from the Mackey Complex. The Terrapins registered a 66-59 home win over Penn State in their latest action, and the Boilermakers were thumped 76-57 by #7 Michigan in their Big Ten opener. Purdue defeated Maryland in both meetings last season.

#23 Maryland Defeats Penn State

The #23 Maryland Terrapins bounced back from their first loss of the season with a convincing 66-59 home win over Penn State in a game that had the Terps as 6.5 point favorites. The Terrapins were able to sink 48.9% of their field goals, while holding Penn State to a 39.7% clip. Maryland’s leading scorer Anthony Cowan Jr. played well in the victory, collecting 15 points on 6 for 12 shooting. The junior guard has shot at least 50% in four out of his last five games, and he is currently posting 16.4 PPG on a 47% field goal efficiency. Bruno Fernando has played a big role in the Terps strong start. He has registered three straight double-doubles which included 12 points and 13 boards in his latest action. The sophomore forward is having a stellar season, averaging 15.4 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds per game.

Maryland has moved up to #23 in the AP Top 25 rankings. They were competitive in a 76-71 loss to #4 Virginia in their lone defeat of the season. The Terrapins are averaging a solid 80.8 points on the season, ranking them 71st overall. They are playing terrific defense, holding opponents to 66.4 points, pegging them 71st in the country.

Purdue Falls to Michigan in Second Straight Loss

The Purdue Boilermakers will attempt to bounce back from a two-game slide. They opened Big Ten play with a rough 76-57 road loss to Michigan in their latest action in a game that had Michigan favored by 5.5 points. The Boilermakers only converted on 35% of their field goals, while Michigan was able to sink 13 three’s. Purdue’s leading scorer Carsen Edwards only went 7 for 21 from the field, although he still managed to finish with 19 points. The junior guard is having a remarkable season, reaching at least 20 points in six of eight games on the season, and he is up to 24.4 PPG on 43% shooting. Ryan Cline resumed his strong play with 15 points on a 6 for 8 shooting performance in the loss to Michigan. The senior guard has shot at least 58% in three straight games, and he is averaging 15.3 points on the year.

Purdue dropped out of the AP Top 25 rankings due to their loss to Michigan, and Ken Pomeroy has them placed at 14th in the country in his rankings. They feature a perfect 3-0 record on their home court, and they are currently averaging 80.1 points on the season, placing them 82nd overall. The Boilermakers are holding opponents to 68 points, positioning them 102nd in the country.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet

I am taking Maryland in this matchup. Purdue has now lost two straight games and three out of their last four games overall, and as a result, they have dropped out of the AP Top 25 rankings. The Boilermakers defense hasn’t been as sharp recently as they have allowed an average of 79.3 points in their last three losses.

Furthermore, Maryland continues to excel, winning seven out of their first eight games of the season highlighted by remarkable defensive play. They are limiting opponents to 39.7% shooting, and they just held Penn State to 59 points in their latest action.

Prediction: Maryland Terrapins

Full-Game Total Pick

I expect a low-scoring contest. Purdue has only averaged 64.5 points in their last two games, and Maryland is defending well, plus the under is 4-1 in the Boilermaker’s last five games overall.

In addition, Maryland has only scored 71 and 66 points respectively in their last two games, and Purdue is only conceding an average of 68 points on the season. The under is 15-6 in Maryland’s last 21 games overall, and I expect it to convert again in this one.

Prediction: Under

Full-Game Prop Bet

I am confident Maryland can have a productive night offensively. Purdue just allowed 73 points to Florida State and 76 points to Michigan, and Maryland features a higher field goal percentage than both those teams. Maryland is shooting a dazzling 50% on the season, and I expect another efficient performance.

Prediction: Maryland Team Total: Over

Half-Time Total Bet

The under on the halftime total is worth a look as I expect a defensive battle throughout this contest. Also, both Purdue and Maryland are averaging more points in the second half this season. They are both averaging 39 points in the first half compared to 41 points in the second half.

Prediction: Under
