The Rhode Island Rams will host the Providence Friars in a state rivalry battle Friday night from the Ryan Center, in Kingston, RI. The Friars tallied an 80-77 victory against Pepperdine last time out, and the Rams fell 86-81 against West Virginia in their latest action. The Friars earned 59-50 win home against the Rams last season.

Providence Back in Win Column After Three Game Skid

The Providence Friars enter this rivalry matchup on a winning note. They thwarted a three-game losing streak with a narrow 80-77 win against Pepperdine in a tilt that had the Friars favored by 7.5 points. The Friars were large favorites in each of their last three losses which included a 66-65 defeat to Long Beach State.

Alpha Diallo is the Friars' top player. The senior guard has not fared well in his last two games but overall he is a threat, averaging 13.2 points along with 8.9 rebounds per game. Diallo has three double-doubles. David Duke is having a solid season. The sophomore guard scored 22 points in a recent loss to Charleston and has reached 20 points twice this season. Duke enters this one logging 12.9 PPG and 4.1 assists per game. Malik White is struggling, going a combined 5 for 21 from the field in his last three games. The senior guard stands third in team scoring with 9.3 points on 39% shooting.

Providence is currently ranked 58th in the country in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball ratings, and they lost their lone road game to Northwestern. The Friars are scoring an average of 75.7 points, ranking them 106th overall. They are conceding an average of 63.2 points, positioning them 76th in DI.

Rhode Island Charged with Second Loss in Last Three Games

The Rhode Island Rams have dropped two out of their last three games overall. They were topped by a good LSU team in the first defeat and were handed an 86-81 road loss against West Virginia on Sunday. The Rams' most notable win came against Alabama highlighted by a season-high 93 points.

Watch out for Fatts Russell in this contest. The junior guard is one of the best players in the A10 and he has scored at least 20 points in six of eight games on the season. Russell scored 32 points in Sunday’s loss, and he is sporting an average of 21.1 points on 47.5% shooting. Jeff Dowtin is another player that can put up big points. The senior guard scored 24 points in a recent win against Manhattan, and he is placed second in team scoring with 13.9 PPG. Tyrese Martin is playing significant minutes and he is posting 10.6 PPG and 5.3 RPG.

The Rams are currently positioned at 89th overall in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball ratings and feature a perfect 4-0 home record. Rhode Island is scoring an average of 73.9 points, ranking them 140th overall. The Rams defense has been an issue at times, and they are allowing an average of 71.9 points, pegging them down at 252nd in DI.

Best Bets for this Game

Insiders Status:

I am selecting Providence in this matchup. The Friars will be up for this rivalry game and they are better than their record indicates. Providence is the better defensive team in this clash and they have limited their opposition to 66 or fewer points in six of their nine games on the season.

Furthermore, Rhode Island doesn’t particularly stand out in any area. They are only shooting 43% as a team and defensively they have been exploited a few times. The Rams surrendered 79 points to Alabama, 96 points to LSU, and 86 points to West Virginia in their previous game. I expect a big game from Friars’ top player Alpha Diallo.

Prediction: Providence Friars

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

This contest should yield plenty of offense. The Friars are averaging a solid 75 points and they should be able to have their way offensively. As mentioned above, Rhode Island’s defense is having issues against higher scoring teams and Providence is another experienced team that is due for a breakout game offensively. The over is 6-2 in the Friars’ last eight road games and 11-4 in their last 15 games overall.

In addition, the Rams play at a quick pace with an average of 75.7 possessions per game and they have scored over 80 points in two out of their last three games. The over is 5-1 in the Rams’ last six games against a team with a winning record, and that trend should prevail again.

Prediction: Over

Full-Game Prop Bet

Insiders Status:

The over on the Providence team total offered on PointsBet is a solid play. The Friars broke out with 80 points in their win against Pepperdine in their latest action. They have underperformed from an offensive standpoint this season but have all the tools to turn it around. Providence has an experienced roster and they should exploit a Rams team that has allowed an average of 82 points in their last three games.

Prediction: Friars Team Total Over

Half-Time Side Pick

Insiders Status:

I am sticking with the Friars on the halftime line. The Friars' defense has been terrific in the opening half where they have only allowed an average of 28.7 points in their last three games. Rhode Island has squandered an average of 35 points over their last three in the first half. Lastly, the Friars are having no problem piling on the points with an average of 37.3 points in the opening half this season.

Prediction: Providence Friars
