On Saturday, Old Dominion sets out to do something it hasn't accomplished since 2011, win at VCU. The Monarchs (3-6) hope to snap their four-game road losing streak to the Rams.
VCU enters this game coming off a two-game losing streak, where they lost to Tennessee and Purdue. The Rams hope their recent home success against the Monarchs gets them back into the win column.
Saturday's game takes place at the Siegel Center with tip-off slated for 8 p.m. EST.
The Monarchs looking for an elusive road winTo win on Saturday, Old Dominion must be able to withstand a ferocious VCU defensive attack. The Rams force an impressive 19.8 turnovers per contest. Moreover, they're holding teams to scoring 63 points per game.
If the Monarchs want to have a chance on Saturday they must shoot the ball better. For the season, their field goal percentage is less than stellar, as they make 39% of their shots and it's even worse from behind the arc where they make 29% of their three-point attempts.
Given VCU's high-pressure defense, it wouldn't be surprising to see them hold the Monarchs to their season averages in shooting. This means Old Dominion will have to win this one on the defensive end.
This is where the Monarchs could sway the advantage. They're holding teams to 65 points per game and to 40% shooting.
VCU's defense creates its offenseThe Rams tenacious defense does an excellent job creating extra turnovers, which they convert to easy scores. Given the Monarchs' inability to shoot the ball well, even if VCU falls short of its turnover average, they might make up for this in challenging shots.
Along with turnovers, the game could come down to play in the paint. The Monarchs have a slight rebounding advantage on both sides of the ball. However, if players like Marcus Santos-Silva can establish a presence in the paint, the Rams could mitigate this advantage.
One player the Rams must limit is Old Dominion's Xavier Green. Green has led the team in scoring in seven of their nine contests by averaging 15 points per game. If he's able to have a hot start, then the Monarchs might dictate the style of play.
