Saturday afternoon on the college hardwood and the Missouri Valley Conference will square off with Conference U.S.A. as the Southern Illinois Salukis grapple with the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. This contest has a start time of 3:00 pm ET and will take place at Reed Green Coliseum in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The Salukis enter this game at 4-5 on the year while the Golden Eagles come in at 2-7.
Salukis Could Be In For A Long YearThe Southern Illinois Salukis have not made it to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last seven-year in a row and you can bet that they won't make it this year. The Salukis we 17-15 last year and they have suffered massive graduation losses from that team, plus Barry Hinson resigned as head coach at the end of last year. Bryan Mullins has taken over and he has a major rebuilding job to do. The Salukis do come in having won two of their last three games, but the two wins were against lower-level Division One teams, North Carolina Central and Norfolk State. Southern Illinois has still gon just 4-5 on the year and they have been picked to finish in the basement of the Missouri Valley Conference this year.
In last night’s win over Norfolk State, four freshmen and one sophomore combined for 55 of the #Salukis 76 points and 23 of 33 rebounds. “The future of the program on display here…Banterra Center rocks and the freshmen are doing the driving.” pic.twitter.com/KwiIHrP4xB— Saluki Basketball (@SIU_Basketball) December 5, 2019
The Salukis have not ben a very good offensive team this year but they did score 76 points in their last game, which was a 76-59 home win over Norfolk State. It was the first time in their last seven games that Southern Illinois topped 66 points. Leading their attack in the contest was Marcus Domask, who had 18 points while Eric McGill had 14 and Lance Jones had 13. Southern Illinois shot 48% from the field overall, including 47% from long range. while allowing Norfolk State to hit just 44% of their shots overall, including 30% from long range. The Salukis enter this game ranked 309th in the nation in scoring, putting up just 64.4 ppg and 51st in points allowed at 61.8 ppg.
Southern Miss Looks To End SlideThe Southern Miss Golden Eagles had a solid season last year, in which they went 20-13 overall, including 11-7 in league play. That season will seem like a million years ago as they are due for a long season this year. The Golden Eagles also lost plenty from last year's team and it has shown so far. Southern Miss comes in having gone 2-7 overall while losing their last four games in a row. Their two wins this year have come against non-lined Vegas teams and they will be hoping to turn that around against a bad team from the Missouri Valley Conference.

It hurts, but we'll grow from it. Tulane moves to 7-1 on the year. pic.twitter.com/ByqqSBM4eF
The Golden Eagles come in off a 61-56 home loss to Tulane in a game where their offense let them down. The defense had allowed 81 points or more in their previous three games, so it was not their fault that Southern Miss lost the game. The Golden Eagles have now averaged 62.3 ppg during their losing streak and 66.7 ppg on the year overall, which is 284th in the nation. Leading theirattack against Tulane was Tyler Stevenson, who was their only player to not double-figures in the game with 10 points. Southern Miss shot 38% from the field overall, including 28% from long range while holding Tulane to just 44% from the field overall and 24% from long range. The Golden Eagles are 290th in the nation in points allowed at 74.2 ppg.
