The Houston Cougars will head on the road to clash with the South Carolina Gamecocks in an inter-conference tilt Sunday afternoon from the Colonial Life Arena. The Cougars registered a 68-60 win against Texas State on Wednesday, and the Gamecocks recorded an 84-80 road win over UMass in their latest tilt.

Cougars Aiming for Third Straight Victory

The Houston Cougars will be aiming for their third straight win in this one. The Cougars have had a light schedule this season. Their two losses occurred against BYU and #11 Oregon and they are coming off a 68-60 home win against Texas State on Wednesday.

Watch for Quentin Grimes as he is playing well, recording over 20 points twice this season which included 21 points in Wednesday’s victory. The sophomore guard features a solid 47.9% clip from the field and he has compiled an average of 16.8 PPG and 4.3 RPG. Fabian White Jr. has posted double-digits in points in five of six games on the season. The junior forward has great numbers, logging 12.5 points on 52.5% shooting accompanied with seven rebounds. Nate Hinton is another strong rebounder and he has registered two double-doubles on the season. The sophomore guard scored 24 points in a recent win against Houston Baptist, and he is third in team scoring with 11.2 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.

The Cougars are ranked 36th overall in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball ratings and stand 1-1 on the road this season. Houston features a very potent offense, and they scoring an average of 83 points, good for 17th in the country. They are conceding an average of 71.3 points, positioning them 242nd in DI.

South Carolina Defeats UMass in Second Straight Win

The South Carolina Gamecocks are also seeking their third straight victory in this one. They have countered a two-game slide with wins against George Washington, followed by an 84-80 road win over UMass on Wednesday in a tilt that had the South Carolina favored by 1.5 points. Overall the Gamecocks are having an inconsistent season and they were charged with an upset loss to Boston University last month.

A.J. Lawson is red-hot, reaching at least 20 points in two out of his last three games. The sophomore guard has now eclipsed 20 points four times this season, and he has compiled an average of 16.6 points on 45.7% shooting. Jermaine Couisnard collected 16 points on a 7 for 11 mark from the field in Wednesday’s victory. The freshman guard has tallied a combined 28 points in his last two games and he owns an average of 10.1 PPG. Maik Kotsar is having a stellar season, sporting 9.8 PPG and 6.4 RPG. The 6-foot-11 senior forward has connected on 51.9% of his field goals.

South Carolina is currently placed 102nd overall in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball ratings and own a 5-1 record on their home court. They are averaging 72.7 points on the season, ranking them 167th in the country. The Gamecocks are a defensive-minded team that is limiting opponents to 65.6 points, positioning them 121st overall.

I am taking Houston in this one. South Carolina is having an inconsistent season and I do not trust them against this Houston team. The Gamecocks have lost to Boston University, Wichita State, and Northern Iowa this season. Their defensive play has been an issue recently, squandering an average of 74.3 points in their last three games. Houston features a powerhouse offense that should take advantage.

Furthermore, Houston has the rebounding edge. They stand seventh in the country with an average of 41 rebounds per game compared to a South Carolina team that is only averaging 35 rebounds per game. This is notable because both teams are averaging nearly the same amount of possessions per game, yet Houston is able to collect more rebounds.

Prediction: Houston Cougars

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Rating:

The over is a strong play when looking at the total. The over has been a safe bet with the Cougars this season as it has converted in five of their six games. This is mainly due to Houstonโ€™s offensive talent. They have five players averaging double-digits in points and the over is 4-1 in their last five games overall.

In addition, South Carolina has found its scoring touch with 74 and 84 points respectively in their last two games, plus the under has cashed in five out of their last seven games overall. Houston will give up points. They have conceded over 70 points in four of their six games.ย

Prediction: Over

I am opting with the over on the Houston team total which can be found on PointsBet. The Cougars are very dangerous offensively led by Quentin Grimes with 16.8 points. They feature a 46.6% team field goal percentage. South Carolina allowed 78 points to Northern Iowa late last month and 80 points against UMass on Wednesday night, and Houston should post similar numbers in this one.

Prediction: Houston Team Total Over

Half-Time Side Pick

Rating:

I am siding with South Carolina on the halftime line. The Gamecocks are having no issues producing in the opening half where they have logged 37 points in their last three games while Houston has only averaged 29.5 points on the road in the first half this season. South Carolina is also playing solid defense in the first half, and especially at home where they are holding opponents to an average of only 28.3 points.

Prediction: South Carolina
