Conference season is underway in the Mountain West as the top team in the conference, San Diego State, faces one of the worst, San Jose State. The San Diego State Aztecs are 9-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference while the San Jose State Spartans are 3-6 overall and 0-1 in the Mountain West. The Aztecs have won the last four meetings, including a sweep last year. Tipoff is Sunday at 3:00 p.m. ET at Viejas Arena in San Diego, California.

San Jose States loses conference opener

The San Jose State Spartans took it on the chin in their Mountain West Conference opener. They lost to a very good Utah State team 71-59. Utah State is ranked No. 25 in the country, so considering they kept it close until the end is promising for the Spartans. It was their fourth straight loss, but they have played good teams including UCLA, Oregon State, and Portland State.

Seneca Knight led the Spartans with 17 points and 6 rebounds. He made 3 of 5 from three-point range. He was the only Spartan in double figures. San Jose State averages 65.6 points per game on 39.8 percent shooting from the field. They shoot 27 percent from three and 65 percent from the foul line.

The Aztecs are undefeated

The San Diego State Aztecs are off to their best start since one Kawhi Leonard played for them. The Aztecs are 9-0 on the year and 1-0 in the Mountain West. They are ranked No. 25 in the KenPom power rankings. They posted their first conference win on Wednesday beating Colorado State 79-57. Malachi Flynn led the way with 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists. Flynn drained 3 three-pointers. Matt Mitchell was also in double figures with 18 points to go along with 8 rebounds.

Flynn is sixth in the Mountain West averaging 16.9 points per game and second in assists with 5.4 assists per game. As a team, the Aztecs average 77 points per game. They shoot 47 percent from the field and 40 percent from three-point range. They also shoot 72 percent from the foul line.

Take San Diego State here. The Aztecs are undefeated for good reason -- they are an excellent basketball team. They are ranked No. 25 in the KenPom power rankings, ahead of conference rival Utah State, which is ranked No. 25 in the AP top 25. In the KenPom rankings, Utah State is ranked No. 45. San Jose State lost by 12 to Utah State at home already this year, so it's doubtful that they'll fare any better against San Diego State in San Diego. The Aztecs should be in the AP top 25 after this week. I look for the Aztecs to win easily and cover the spread here.

Prediction: San Diego State

Take the under in this one. San Diego State has a great defensive unit. Opponents average about 60 points per game against them and they haven't given up more than 73 points in any game this year. San Jose State has an anemic offense and facing San Diego State, they won't crack 60. The Spartans only average 65 points per game as it is, and shoot a pretty bad 39.8 percent from the field. They don't score well on a good day, and this won't be a good day. The Aztecs like to slow it down as they rank 256 in the country in pace of play.
