Aztecs Squeak By The Aggies
The San Diego State Aztecs are not the powerhouse in the Mountain West Conference that they once were, but they are having another solid season. The Aztecs could really be rounding into form as they come in off a nice 68-63 home win over Utah State and is now 4-1 over their last five games. San Diego State is now at 14-9 overall, including 6-4 in league play and they are 3.5 games out of first in the MWC. The Aztecs will need to win the MWC Tournament in order to get into the Big Dance. They are ranked 147th in the land by KenPom.
The Aztecs have been led by their defense this year and that defense was solid against a good Utah State offense. SDSU held them to just 63 points on 39.2% shooting overall, despite the fact that they allowed them to hit 41.7% (10/24) of their shots from long range. The offense was not great as they hit just 37.3% of their shots overall, including just 33.3% (7/21) of their shots from long range. The difference in the game was that the Aztecs were +4 in the turnover battle and +7 in the offensive rebounding battle. Leading their attack in the game was Devin Watson (16.1 ppg), who had 23 points.

The Aztecs enter this game ranked 134th in the nation in scoring at 74.8 ppg, while also ranking 150th in shooting (45.3%), 69th in three-point shooting (36.8%) and 52nd in free throw shooting (74.3%). On defense, they are 125th in points allowed, giving up 69.2 ppg, while also ranking 78th in defensive FG% (41.8%) and 147th in three-point defense (33.7%).
The Rams Are Struggliung
The Colorado State Rams have not been playing well of late. They come in off a 74-66 loss at Wyoming and have now lost their last two games in a row and five of their last seven. The Rams are at 9-15 overall, including just 4-7 in league play and they are 6.0 game out of first in the conference. The Rams have no shot at postseason play unless they win their conference tourney. Ken Pom has them rated at 185th in the nation.
The offense has not been horrible this year, but it struggled in their loss to the Cowboys as they hit just 42.3% of their shots from the field overall, including just 33.3% of their shots from long range. The Rams had scored 167 points in their last two games combined, but getting that offense back on track will not be easy against a tough SDSU defense. Leading their attack in the game was J.D. Paige (15.1 ppg), who had 22. The defense had their issues with Justin James, who dropped 36 points on them. The Cowboys shot 47.6% from the field overall, including 54.2 (13/24) from long range.
The Rams enter this game ranked 122nd in the nation in scoring at 75.2 ppg, while also ranking 52nd in shooting (47.3%), 131st in three-point shooting (35.3%) and 193rd in free throw shooting (69.9%). On defense, they are 301st in points allowed, giving up 77.0 ppg, while also ranking 275th in defensive FG% (45.4%) and 326th in three-point defense (37.5%).
Colorado State is:
- 2-6 ATS in their last 8 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400.
- 2-6 ATS in their last 8 home games vs. a team with a losing road record
San Diego State is:
- 14-5 ATS in their last 19 vs. Mountain West
- The favorite is 9-4-2 ATS the last 15 games in this series.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
I like the Aztecs a lot in this one. they have been playing well of late, while the Rams have been trending the other way. The Rams struggled to score in their last game and the Aztecs have a defense that can make them struggle again. San Diego State has allowed just 66 ppg over their last five games and 67.7 ppg in league play, while the Rams have allowed 76.6 ppg in league play. Big edge on defense for the Aztecs and that will be the difference in the game
Prediction: San Diego State -2
Full-Game Total Pick
The Aztecs will not push the pace and they play solid defense. That combination will lead to a nice low scoring game. the Rams have allowed just 72 ppg in their last five games, while the Aztecs have allowed just 66 ppg over the same stretch and 67.7 ppg in league play. The Under is 15-5-1 in San Diego State’s last 21 games following an ATS win and 4-1 in Colorado State’s last five vs. the Mountain West.
Prediction: Under 147
