Wyoming heads to San Diego State to take on the Aztecs on Wednesday night in a Mountain West battle. The Cowboys have alternated wins and losses over their last four games and currently sit at 7-5 in the Mountain West and in a tie for third place. The Aztecs have lost three out of four and have been playing some terrible basketball. They were embarrassed 83-58 in their latest loss to Nevada.
The Aztecs are now 5-7 in the Mountain West and in eighth place in the conference. It’s been a long, long time since San Diego State was this far down in the standings. Head coach Brian Dutcher has a lot to follow in Steve Fischer, but so far it has not been a successful season and 13-10 overall doesn’t cut it for this program.
Wyoming loses to UNLV
Wyoming his having themselves quite a year and came into Saturday’s contest at 16-8 overall and an impressive 7-4 in the Mountain West. Unfortunately, the Runnin Rebels outplayed them from the opening tip and won going away, 85-70. Shakur Juiston was the best player on the court, notching 22 points and 14 boards for the Rebels who forged their way into a tie with the Cowboys for third in the Mountain West.
The Cowboys best player, Justin James, had a game to forget. He shot the ball 23 times, but made only six of them and finished with just 14 points. 14 points on 23 shots is not going to get it done, and the Cowboys will need James to play better on Wednesday, which I expect he will.
San Diego State gets routed
San Diego State lost their second straight game and third game in their last four on Saturday, as Nevada annihilated them in the second half of a 83-58 win. The Aztecs were actually tied at halftime, but were outscored 48-23 in the second half, showing no fight at all. They have dropped way down the standings in the Mountain West, something we are not used to seeing from the Aztecs.
Their best player this year has been Devin Watson, but it shows just how far the Aztecs have dropped. Watson leads the team at 13.1 points per game, but shoots only 41% from the field. It’s advisable not to have your best scored shooting that low, and it sets a bad tone for the entire team.
The Wyoming Cowboys are:
- 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
- 21-7 ATS in their last 28 games following a straight up loss.
- 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 Wednesday games.
The San Diego State Aztecs are:
- 2-5-1 ATS in their last 8 games following a straight up loss of more than 20 points.
- 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
The Aztecs are a disaster right now. I can’t endorse them and I’ll take Wyoming to win outright and cover on Wednesday night.
