The Princeton Tigers will collide with the Yale Bulldogs in an Ivy League battle Friday night from the Jadwin Gymnasium. The Bulldogs compiled an easy 75-57 home win over Dartmouth last time out, and the Tigers registered an 81-74 road win against Columbia in their previous action. Princeton beat Yale in all three meetings last season.

Yale's Defense Continues to Shine, Improve to 5-1 in Ivy League Play

The Yale Bulldogs head into this big game a winner of seven out of their last eight contests. They are tied with Yale for first place in the Ivy League with a 5-1 record. Yale is known for their stifling defense which was evident in their dominating 75-57 home win against Dartmouth in their previous game in a tilt hat had the Bulldogs tagged as 13.5 point favorites.

Look out for Paul Atkinson who continues to shine. The junior forward has connected on over 60% of his field goals in five straight games. Atkinson is sporting an average of 17.6 PPG and 7.7 RPG. Azar Swain is red-hot, sinking over 20 points in each of his last three games. The junior guard has improved his season average to 16.4 PPG. Jordan Bruner has reached double-digits in points in two out of his last four clashes. The senior forward is posting 11.8 PPG and 9.4 RPG.

The Bulldogs are ranked 50th in the country in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball ratings and feature a 7-4 road record. Yale is scoring an average of 77 points, good for 44th in DI. They are limiting opponents to 63.5 points, placing them 39th overall.

Princeton Rebounds with Road Win, Remain in 1st

The Princeton Tigers will look to lift their Ivy League record to 6-1 in this bout. They have come away with the victory in seven out of their last eight games overall and their lone conference defeat came on the road against Cornell. Princeton covered the three-point spread in a solid 81-74 road win over Columbia in their latest game last Sunday.

Jaelin Llewellyn has not been effective recently and is 2 for 12 from beyond the arc over his last three games. The freshman guard is capable of big points and has reached the 20 point mark three times this season. Llewellyn is averaging 14.3 PPG on a 37% clip from the field. Richmond Aririguzoh usually has his way underneath the bucket and has connected on over 70% of his field goals in three out of his last four contests. The junior center is sporting an average of 13.4 PPG and 8.2 RPG. Ryan Schwieger accumulated 18 points in his previous game. The sophomore guard stands third in team scoring with 12.6 PPG on 50% shooting.

The Tigers are positioned 185th in DI in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball ratings and hold a 5-4 home record. Princeton is averaging 72.2 points on the season, ranking them 149th overall. They are conceding an average of 70.7 points, positioning them 220th in the country.

Rating:

I am taking Yale in this showdown for the top spot in the Ivy League. Yale has the better offensive and defensive stats than Princeton and they are a strong road team. They are sporting a 7-4 road record on the season. Yale has won seven out of their last eight games overall, and they should be able to exploit the Tigers’ defense. The Bulldogs have a ton of scoring threats and they have scored at least 76 points in five out of their last six contests.

Furthermore, the Princeton defense can be an issue. They have squandered 73 and 74 points respectively in their last two games. Opponents are shooting 47% from the field against the Tigers this season and I expect Yale to take advantage.

Prediction: Yale Bulldogs

Rating:

I expect this game to yield plenty of offense. The over has been a safe bet for Yale recently due to their powerhouse offense. Yale has the top offense in the Ivy League and is shooting a dazzling 47.4% as a team. The over is a perfect 6-0 in the Bulldogs’ last six games overall, and 5-1 in their last six road games.

In addition, while I expect the Bulldogs to contain Princeton, they should still make an impact on their home floor. The Tigers are shooting a solid 46.9% as a team and just scored 81 points in their latest action.

Prediction: Over
