James Madison Dukes at Towson Tigers

James Madison is coming off a tough, 81-78 overtime loss at home to fall to 4-10 in the CAA. They’ll face an 8-7 Towson team that barely got by Delaware at home, 67-65 on Thursday. Thes teams met on Feb. 3 from Harrisonburg with the Duke winning 79-73.

Long week for JMU

Thanks to a potential Mumps outbreak on the team, James Madison had to postpone two CAA games last week. They had to make them up this week when everybody was cleared. They beat UNCW on Tuesday, 62-61 after having not played since Feb. 3. On Thursday, they led CAA-best Charleston, 66-58 with 4:14 left before the Cougars finished regulation on an 11-3 run to send the game into overtime. The game was tied 78-78 before Grant Riller nailed a three to win the game for the Cougars. JMU’s desperation three-pointer fell short. The loss spoiled a great night from freshman guard Matt Lewis, who had a career-high 33 points on 10-of-16 shooting in 43 minutes. Darius Banks added 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting. The Dukes shot 43.3 percent from the field and 8-of-21 from the 3-point line. But they were outrebounded by 11 and allowed the Cougars to shoot 46.7 percent from the field. Riller had a big game for the Cougars with 32 points on 13-of-20 shooting.

Toledo transfer guard Stuckey Mosley leads the Dukes with 19 points per game on 41.9 percent shooting (37.9% 3pt). Lewis adds 13.8 points per game on 37.5 percent shooting (32% 3pt). JMU averages 73.6 points per game on 42.2 percent shooting (33.3% 3pt). They allow 76.9 points per game on 45.4 percent shooting (36.7% 3pt).

Tigers nearly blow game at home

Towson hasn’t lost or won two straight games in the last eight games. The Tigers nearly lost two straight but found a way to edge Delaware at home on Thursday night by two. The Tigers shot 12-of-21 from the line (57.1%) and missed four straight down the stretch with a four-point lead that nearly cost them the game. After Mike Morsell missed two free throws with Towson up two with five seconds left, Ryan Allen raced down the court and had his three-point shot blocked by Eddie Keith as time expired. Morsell did led the team with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while Starr added 15 points. Leading scorer Zane Martin struggled from the field, going just 3-of-16 (0-4 3pt) to finish with nine points. That was the first time in 21 games that Martin had not scored in double figures. The Tigers did outrebound the Blue Hens by five although Delaware shot 48.2 percent from the field. Towson turned it over 14 times and forced 14 turnovers.

The Tigers average 75.9 points per game on 46.4 percent shooting (36.1% 3pt). They are allowing 71.4 points per game on 43.1 percent shooting (34.1% 3pt). Martin leads Towson in scoring with 19.6 points per game on 46.3 percent shooting (37% 3pt).

NCAAB Trends:

JMU is:

  • 5-1 ATS last 6 overall.
  • 4-0 ATS last 4 road games.

Towson is:

  • 0-4 ATS last 4 Saturday games.
  • 0-6 ATS last 6 overall.

It’s risky to go against Towson because James Madison is coming off an overtime game and also played on Tuesday. But the Tigers are playing poorly right now and have been overvalued all season since winning 10 straight games in non-conference play. Take the road team.

Pick: James Madison
