Marshall heads to North Texas to take on the Mean Green in a battle of two teams over .500 in the Conference USA standings. The Thundering Herd are currently 9-4 in conference and 18-8 overall. They have won four straight games and have risen to fourth place in the C-USA standings. This is the first and only matchup between the two teams this year as Marshall looks for a fifth straight win.
North Texas has been up and down all year and is coming off of a tough loss, their second straight, losing 102-94 to Western Kentucky in overtime on Thursday night. The loss dropped the Mean Green to 7-6 in conference and 14-12 overall. Marshall puts up 85 points a game so the Mean Green defense will need to focus on Saturday.
Marshall keeps winning
Two weeks ago, the Thundering Herd were 5-4 and in the middle of the Conference USA standings. They have now won four straight to rise to 9-4, currently sit in 4th place in conference, and look like they might be a threat to win the tournament starting in a few weeks. Their most recent win was an easy 13 point win 93-80 at Rice. The game was actually only a two point game at halftime, but Marshall pulled away in the second half.
The Thundering Herd were led by C.J. Burks who had a career high with 36 points and he hit six three-pointers in the process. Jon Elmore also had a monster game, finishing with 28 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Basketball is a team game, but these two carried the day on Thursday.
North Texas loses two straight
A week ago, North Texas was tied in the standings with Marshall, but they have now dropped two games back after two straight losses and two straight wins by the Thundering Herd. Still, the Mean Green are actually only one spot behind Marshall in the standings, as North Texas is in 5th place. Their latest loss was a winnable game as they went down 102-94 to Western Kentucky in an overtime game.
Taveion Hollingsworth had 30 points for the Hilltoppers and Darius Thompson had 28 points, including nine points in overtime to lead Western Kentucky to the win. Despite the loss, the Mean Green played well, shooting 48% from the field and over 52% from beyond the arc. Western Kentucky is 11-2 in conference so even thought they lost, they can hold their heads high.
The Marshall Thundering Herd are:
- 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games overall.
- 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games after scoring more than 90 points in their previous game.
- 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
The North Texas Mean Green are:
- 2-5 ATS in their last 7 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games after scoring more than 90 points in their previous game.
The Thundering Herd are rolling right now and I don’t think the Mean Green has quite the talent to keep up. I think Marshall wins easier than expected.
