The #8 Florida State Seminoles will host the Pittsburgh Panthers in an ACC battle Tuesday night from the Donald L. Tucker Center. The Panthers dropped a 67-57 road decision to Virginia Tech in their previous action, and the Seminoles registered an 80-77 home win over Syracuse on Saturday. Pittsburgh tallied a 63-61 home win against Florida State back in the regular-season opener.
Pittsburgh's Offensive Woes Lead to 9th ACC Defeat
The Pittsburgh Panthers have lost three out of their last four contests. They have not been able to sustain any offensive momentum in ACC play which has played a key role in their 6-9 record in conference action. Pittsburgh were 3.5 point dogs in a 67-57 road loss to Virginia Tech on Saturday. The Panthers will not make the NCAA Tournament unless they win a majority of their remaining games.
Justin Champagnie is an awful 2 for 12 from beyond the arc in his last two clashes. The freshman guard scored 30 points in a recent win against Georgia Tech is averaging 12.5 PPG and 7.3 RPG. Trey McGowens has struggled recently and has only scored a combined 15 points in his last two games. The sophomore guard has reached the 20 point mark only three times this season and owns an average of 12.5 PPG on 37% shooting. Xavier Johnson has scored 11 or fewer points in each of his last three games. The sophomore guard has registered an average of 11.8 PPG.
The Panthers are positioned 98th in the country in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball ratings and are 2-6 on the road this season. Pittsburgh is only averaging 65.8 points, pegging them down at 313th in DI. They are allowing an average of 63.9 points, good for 41st overall.
#8 Florida State Holds on to Top Syracuse for 11th ACC Win
The Florida State Seminoles enter this one a winner of four out of their last five games. They are involved in a thrilling battle for the top spot in the tough ACC. The Seminoles are 11-3 in ACC play, just one game out of first. They were unable to cover the 8.5 points spread in an 80-77 home win against Syracuse on Saturday. The Seminoles are projected as a #3 seed in ESPN’s Bracketology.
Devin Vessell did not see any action in Saturday’s win although he does not have an injury. The sophomore guard is having a terrific season overall and has compiled an average of 13.4 PPG and 5.3 RPG. Vessell is questionable for this one due to a disciplinary matter. Trent Forrest has scored at least 13 points in three out of his last four games. The senior guard has lifted his season average to 11.6 PPG on 45.4% shooting. M.J. Walker rebounded with a 16 point effort in Saturday’s victory. The junior guard is averaging 10.7 PPG. Walker is questionable with an injury to his mouth.
The Seminoles come in at #8 in the country in this week’s AP Top 25 rankings, and Ken Pomeroy has them 22nd in his ratings. Florida State is a perfect 13-0 on their home floor and they are scoring an average of 75.3 points, ranking them 76th in DI. The Seminoles are holding opponents to 65.6 points, good for 78th overall.
