The #16 Seton Hall Pirates will collide with the #21 Butler Bulldogs in a Big East showdown Wednesday night from the Prudential Center. The Bulldogs were dealt a 73-66 home loss by Georgetown on Wednesday night, and the Pirates were toppled 74-71 against Providence in their Saturday action. Seton Hall registered a 78-70 road win against Butler last month.

Butler Stunned by Georgetown, Fall to 7-6 in Big East Play

The Butler Bulldogs will look to rebound after a costly loss. They were seven-point favorites in a 73-66 home loss to a shorthanded Georgetown team on Saturday which is a bad loss that will impact their tournament seeding. Butler has been inconsistent recently and they are 2-3 in their last five games overall. They have fallen to 7-6 in Big East play on the season and are projected as a #6 seed in ESPN's Bracketology.

Kamar Baldwin has scored at least 17 points in three out of his last four games. The senior guard has not been nearly as accurate with his shot recently and he is currently averaging 16.1 PPG on a 41% mark from the field. Sean McDermott has not been as threatening from three-point range as of late which included a 3 for 10 effort on Saturday. The senior forward holds an average of 11.9 PPG on 50% shooting. Bryce Nze has only scored a combined 13 points in his last two games. The junior forward owns an average of 9.5 PPG.

The Bulldogs have dropped two spots to #21 in this week's AP Top 25 rankings and they are placed 27th overall in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings. Butler is 4-4 on the road and they are currently averaging 68.7 points, ranking them 253rd in the country. The Bulldogs are holding opponents to 61.7 points, good for 16th in DI.

Seton Hall Topped by Providence, Remain in First Place

The Seton Hall Pirates are fortunate to still be in first place in the Big East. They have been charged with the defeat in two straight games but still hold a narrow one-game lead ahead of Creighton with a 10-3 record. The Pirates defense hasn’t been as effective in their two-game slide which included a 73-71 road loss to Providence on Saturday in a tilt that had Seton Hall favored by one point. Seton Hall is a #3 seed in ESPN’s latest version of Bracketology.

Myles Powell is a big-game player and came through with 27 points in Saturday’s defeat. The senior guard has scored at least 19 points in three out of his last four clashes and is sporting an average of 21.7 PPG on 40% shooting. Quincy McKnight has only been able to sink 2 of his last 12 three-point attempts spread across his last three games. The senior guard scored 20 points in a loss to Creighton last week and is posting 11.9 PPG and 5.4 APG. Sandro Mamukelashvili had an off night with only seven points on Saturday. The junior forward has filed an average of 10.3 PPG on a 50.8% field goal efficiency.

The Pirates dipped six spots to #16 in this week’s AP Top 25 rankings, and Ken Pomeroy has them at 15th in his ratings. Seton Hall 9-3 at home and they are averaging 74.4 points, ranking them 93rd in the country. They are allowing an average of 66.6 points, positioning them 101st overall.

Best Bets for this Game

Full-Game Side Bet

Insiders Status:

I am siding with Seton Hall in this one. Butler does not look nearly as dangerous as they did at the start of Big East play and they have only won two out of their last five games. The Bulldogs are slumping offensively, averaging only 63 points in their last three games overall.

Furthermore, Seton Hall already earned a convincing 78-70 road win against Butler this season. The Bulldogs defense also hasn't been nearly as sharp and they have surrendered at least 73 points in three out of their last four games. Seton Hall definitely has the offensive capability to exploit them. The Pirates should come away with a convincing home win against a struggling team.

Prediction: Seton Hall Pirates

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

The over is the play when looking at the total. These foes played to a high scoring 78-70 decision in the first clash. The Bulldogs' poor defensive play is a big reason I like the over. They just surrendered 73 points against a Hoyas team playing without their top two scorers. The over is 4-1 in the Bulldogs’ last five games following a straight-up loss.

In addition, the Pirates defense also hasn’t fared particularly well lately and they have allowed over 70 points in four out of their last five games. The over is 5-1-1 in the Pirates’ last seven Wednesday games.

Prediction: Over

Full-Game Prop Bet

Insiders Status:

The under on the Butler team total offered on PointsBet is a strong prop. The Bulldogs have especially struggled to generate significant offense on the road. They have only averaged 63.8 points in their six Big East road games. Also, Butler has converted on 41% or fewer of their field goals in two out of their last three games overall and was held to a 42% clip against Seton Hall in the first meeting.

Prediction: Butler Team Total Under

Half-Time Side Pick

Insiders Status:

I am sticking with Seton Hall on the halftime line. The Bulldogs are only averaging 30.7 points on the road in the first half this season.  Also, the Pirates don't give up many points in the first half and especially at home. They are holding opponents to 30 points on their home court in the first half this season.

Prediction: Seton Hall
