The Toledo Rockets will look to get back on track when they host the Eastern Michigan Eagles in a MAC battle Friday evening from the Savage Arena. The Chippewas are coming off an 83-81 road loss to Western Michigan, and the Rockets dropped an 85-79 decision to Eastern Michigan in their latest action. Toledo tallied a 93-82 road win against Central Michigan in the first meeting last month.
Chippewas Fall Short in Hard Fought OT Loss
The Central Michigan Chippewas dropped to 5-9 in conference play in their tough 83-81 overtime road loss to Western Michigan on Tuesday night. The Chippewas only shot 41% on the night, while holding Western Michigan to 40% shooting. Chippewas’ top scorer Shawn Roundtree scored a team-high 18 points on a 5 for 12 shooting performance in the defeat. The junior guard is on a rough 11 for 35 stretch from the field in his last three games and is now averaging 15 points on 38% shooting. David DiLeo played well in Tuesday’s defeat, going 5 for 10 from three-point range, and finished with 17 points. The sophomore forward has only reached double-digits in points in two of his last six games and stands third in team scoring with 12.1 points per game.
Central Michigan has dropped four out of their last five games to fall to second last in the MAC West standings. They have been very competitive in most of their conference losses, and are positioned at 182nd overall in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball rankings. The Chippewas are currently averaging 77.9 points per game, ranking them 73rd in the country. They are conceding an average of 72 points, placing them 167th overall.
Rockets Defense Struggles in Loss to Eastern Michigan
The Toledo Rockets did not defend well in their 85-79 road loss to Eastern Michigan on Tuesday night to drop to 11-4 in MAC play. The Rockets did post a solid 50% clip from the field, however, Eastern Michigan was able to sink 55% of their field goals. Rockets’ leading scorer Tre’Shaun Fletcher led the way offensively with a 19-point effort on 7 for 12 shooting in the losing cause. The senior guard is having a solid season, reaching 20 points 12 times this season, and he is currently posting an average of 18.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. Jaelan Sanford added 16 points on a 5 for 11 mark from the field in Tuesday’s loss. The junior guard has scored 16 or fewer points in three out of his last four games and is now averaging 16.4 points on 45% shooting.
The Rockets have played poor defense in their mini two-game skid, and they now hold a narrow one-game lead ahead of Ball State for first place in the MAC West with only three games remaining. They are placed at 121st in the country in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball rankings. Toledo is scoring an average of 79.7 points per game, ranking them 58th in the country. They are allowing an average of 75.4 points, positioning them 256th overall.
The Central Michigan Chippewas are:
- 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games against Toledo.
- 7-1-1 ATS in their last 9 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600.
- 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games.
The Toledo Rockets are:
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games.
- 0-7 ATS in their last 7 home games against a team with a losing road record.
- 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up loss.
I am taking the points with Central Michigan in this matchup. Central Michigan just took a strong Western Michigan team to overtime in an 83-81 loss in their latest road game, and I am confident they can keep this one very close. Furthermore, Toledo will give up points as they have allowed an average of 76.5 points in their last nine games. Central Michigan is averaging a solid 78 points, and they do feature some scoring punch. Toledo has not covered in three straight home games, and Central Michigan is strong enough in both ends of the court to make this one a close contest.
