The Georgia State Panthers will host the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Tuesday in a Sun Belt Conference match-up. Georgia State comes into this match-up with an 11-5 overall record and is third in the Sun Belt East with a 5-4 conference record. Appalachian State is 12-9 overall and 6-6 in the Sun Belt which places them fourth in the East. These teams have already played twice, and Applachaina State won both games as a four-point home dog. The Mountaineers won 80-71 on January 22 and 74-61 on January 23.

Mountaineers drop fourth sraight game

After getting off to a 6-2 start in the Sun Belt, the Mountaineers have dropped their last four games and have also had four games canceled or postponed since February 5. Over the weekend, the Mountaineers were swept by South Alabama, losing 65-63 on Friday and 56-54 on Saturday as a 1.5 and 3.5 point favorite respectively. Senior guard Justin Forrest lead Applachian State with 20 points in each of the losses. On the season, Forrest is third on the team averaging 10.9 points in 18 games. Last year he led the team with 17.3 ppg. Leading the team in scoring this season is sophomore guard Donovan Gregory with 11.6 ppg, followed by junior guard Adrian Delph with 11.5 ppg.

Appalachian State averages 70.8 points per game on the offensive end, which is eighth among the 12 teams is in the Sun Belt. The Mountaineers are also second-to-last in the Sun Belt with a 31.4% on three-point shots and ninth shooting 42.1% from the field. On the defensive side of the ball, things are better. The Mountaineers are second in the conference holding opponents to 62.4 ppg points per game and fourth at 41.7% shooting from the field.

Georgia State hopes third time is a charm against App State

After losing three straight games, Georgia State won its third straight game on February 20 with a 65-53 win over Troy State, which followed an 80-66 win over Troy State on February 19. The Panthers were a 10 point favorite in each game. Senior guards Kane Williams led the way with 15 points on Friday, and Corey Allen scored a team-best 16 points on Saturday. On the season, Allen leads the team with 15.3 ppg and has averaged 14.5 ppg against Applachian State this season.

Georgia State is the second highest-scoring team in the Sun Belt, averaging 80.5 ppg, and is shooting a lead best 47.5% from the field. Defensively the Panthers are allowing the second-highest amount of points per game at 72.1 but are holding opponents to the third-lowest shooting percentage at 41.2%

Rating:

Last month, Appalachian State was the straight-up underdog in both games against Georgia State, yet managed to win those games outright by nine and 13 points, respectively. There are no major injuries listed on either side and although Georgia State will now be the home team on Tuesday, based upon how these teams have played against each other this season, I think the spread is too high. Appalachian State is coming off of back-to-back losses by only two points against a Sout Alabama team that is currently first in the Sun Belt East Division. I think the Mountaineers reverse more respect than they are getting against a team that they gave already beaten as an underdog twice and will take them to cover.

Prediction: Appalachian State Mountaineers +7

Full-Game Total Pick

Rating:

The Mountaineers are 298th in the nation in adjusted tempo according to KenPom and should be able to slow down the Panthers, who are 105th in tempo. The Mountaineers have played to the under in their last three games, and there have been less than 136 points scored in each of their last five games overall. Georgia State has played to the under in seven of their last 10 games, and the under has also cashed in five of their last six games after an against-the-spread win. I will take the under on Tuesday.

Prediction: Under 140
