The Virginia Tech Hokies will host the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Tuesday in ACC action. Georgia Tech is 11-8 on the season and ninth in the ACC with a 7-6 record. Virginia Tech is ranked No. 16 in the country in the Coaches Poll, 14-4 overall, and third in the ACC with an 8-3 record. These two teams have not met since last season when Georgia Tech won 76-57 as a 2.5 point home favorite.

Yellow Jacket going for third straight conference win

According to the media preseason poll, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets were predicted to finish ninth out of 15 teams in a tough ACC conference, as that is where they currently are. According to the College Basketball Power Index, the Yellow Jackets are currently rated 55th in the country according to BPI and have faced the 40th toughest schedule in the country. The Yellow Jackets won their second game in a row on Saturday with an 87-60 victory over Miami as a four-point favorite. It was also the third straight against the spread victory for Georgia Tech. If the season ended today, the Yellow Jackets are not currently projected to make the NCAA Tournament, but with games against Syracuse, Duke, and Wake Forest still on the set schedule after Virginia Tech, there are still ample opportunities to improve their resume.

The Yellow Jackets are led by their big three, who has played in all 19 games this season. Jose Alvarado, a 6' senior, leads the team with 16.7 ppg. Moses Wright, a 6'9 senior, is averaging 16.3 ppg and 7.5 rebounds, and Michael Devoe, a 6'5 junior, averages 14.7 points. According to KenPom, Georgia Tech is the 40th best team in the country, ranking 28th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 64th in adjusted defensive efficiency.

Hokies return from layoff

According to the College Basketball Power Index, Virginia Tech is rated 33rd in BPI and has faced the 64th most difficult schedule in the nation. According to Joe Lunardi's ESPN bracketology, the Virginia Tech Hokies would currently be a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Hokies had a big non-conference win over No. 3 Villanova 81-73, as a 9.5 point road dog early in the season on November 28, along with wins over Radford, South Florida, VMI, Coppin State, and Longwood in non-conference play. The only loss outside of the ACC came against Penn State 75-55 on December 8 in a game they were favored to win by 5.5 points. The Hokies have won three of their last four games but have not played since back on February 6, when they escaped Miami on the road 80-76 as a five-point favorite. Virginia Tech's last three schedule games against Florida State, Louisville, and North Carolina were all postponed.

According to the KenPom ratings, Virginia Tech ranks 35th overall. The Hokies are 49th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 37th in adjusted defensive efficiency. Aluma, a 6'9 junior, leads the team with 15.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, followed d 6'2 sophomore guard Tyrece Radford, who was is averaging 11.1 ppg has missed for games this season and has been suspended for not upholding the high standards the program has for its students and athletes, so he will not play on Tuesday.

Insiders Status:

Virginia Tech has the better record on paper; however, Georgia Tech has faced an overall tougher schedule this season and rates close to even with the Hokies when looking at KenPom's advance metrics. The Yellow Jackets are currently playing well and have played four games since the Hokies last took the floor due to a COVID-19 layoff. I expect the Hokies to come out a little rusty. Virginia Tech will also be short-handed without Tyrece Radford, the team's second-leading scorer, and possibly even without Jalen Cone, their fifth-leading scorer with 9.2 ppg who is battling a left ankle injury. Take a healthy, surging, and experienced Georgia Tech team pull off the small upset on Tuesday.

Prediction: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets +2

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Overall, both teams have been stronger plays on the over this season, with the under only cashing in seven of Georgia Tech's 19 games and seven of Virginia Tech's 18 games. The total here is set low for a Georgia Tech team that is averaging a combined 145.7 ppg and a Virginia Tech team that is averaging a combined 138.1 ppg. The Yellow Jackets have combined for at least 136 points in each of their last three games, and Virginia Tech has combined for at least 155 points in its last two contests. I like the over here.

Prediction: Over 136
