UC Santa Barbara (20-7; 16-8 ATS; 13-11 O/U) vs. Cal State Northridge (6-22; 10-14-1 ATS; 8-16 O/U)

The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos will head on the road to clash with the Cal State Northridge Matadors in a WCC tilt Saturday night from the Matadome. The Gauchos are coming off a rough 69-49 road loss to UC Irvine, and the Matadors were edged 90-86 in double overtime by Cal Poly on Thursday night. UC Santa Barbara notched a 75-51 home win against Cal State Northridge earlier this season.

Gauchos Flat in Showdown Against UC Irvine

The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos went cold in their 69-49 road loss to UC Irvine on Thursday night to fall to 9-4 in conference play. The Gauchos posted an abysmal 31% shooting performance, while holding UC Irvine to a 41% clip. Gabe Vincent led the way offensively with a 17 point effort on a 7 for 19 mark from the field. The junior guard is on a roll, scoring at least 17 points in four straight games, increasing his season average to 11.9 points on 43% shooting. Gauchos’ leading scorer Max Heidegger had a rough night in Thursday’s loss, going 4 for 14 from the field for a total of 11 points. The freshman guard has not been quite as productive down the final stretch, however overall he is having a tremendous season, averaging 20 points and he features a 42.6% shooting percentage from beyond the arc.

The Gauchos dropped to a half a game back of UC Irvine in the conference standings as a result of Thursday’s loss. They have followed an eight game winning streak by losing two straight games. They posses a 4-3 road record in conference play and are positioned at 116th in the nation in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball rankings. UC Santa Barbara is averaging 76.1 points per game, ranking them 110th overall. They are conceding 70.1 points per game, placing them 119th overall.

Matadors Fall in Double OT in 11th Conference Loss

The Cal State Northridge Matadors dropped to 3-11 in conference play in their tough 90-86 double overtime road loss to Cal Poly on Thursday night. The Matadors shot 45.5% on the night, while Cal Poly was able to sink 13 three’s. Matadors’ leading scorer Tavrion Dawson had a productive night in the defeat, netting 31 points on 13 for 25 shooting to go with 13 rebounds. The senior forward has reached at least 17 points in four out of his last five games, and is currently averaging 16.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Terrell Gomez wasn’t sharp in Thursday’s loss, sinking only 4 of 14 shots for a total of 12 points. The freshman guard is sporting a dazzling 45% clip from three-point range, and he stands third in team scoring with 11.3 points per game.

The Matadors have lost three straight and eight out of their last nine games as scoring points has been a big issue. They have lost five of their last six conference home games, and are placed down at 326th overall in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball rankings. Cal State Northridge is only averaging 65.5 points per game, ranking them down at 330th overall. They are allowing an average of 72.2 points, positioning them 170th overall.

The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos are:

  • 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games against Cal State Northridge.
  • 10-3 ATS in their last 13 road games.
  • 7-3 ATS in their last 10 Saturday games.

The Cal State Northridge Matadors are:

  • 0-5 ATS in their last 5 road games against a team with a winning home record.
  • 6-20 ATS in their last 26 home games.
  • 10-26-1 ATS in their last 37 games following an ATS loss.

I am siding with UC Santa Barbara in this matchup. Cal State Northridge is well below average in both ends of the court, and they already lost 75-51 to UC Santa Barbara earlier this season. UC Santa Barbara has won eight out of their last ten games, and I expect them to come out flying after their rough loss to UC Irvine on Thursday night. They are playing solid defense, allowing an average of only 68 points in their last ten games, and they were able to hold the Matadors to 32.8% shooting in the first meeting this season.
