Georgia Southern at Louisiana-Monroe

When and Where: Friday, Feb. 8, Fant-Ewing Coliseum, Monroe, La., 8 p.m. EST.

Georgia Southern is on a quick turnaround in its bid to sweep its two-game road swing of Louisiana opponents as it faces Sun Belt Conference rival Louisiana-Monroe on Friday night.

Eagles bounce back with needed win

Georgia Southern (14-9, 6-4 Sun Belt) is one of five teams at the top of the conference standings separated by one game entering play Thursday night. The Eagles have alternated wins and losses in their last five games after racing past Louisiana 103-86 on Wednesday night.

Tookie Brown scored a season-high 32 points and Quan Jackson added 23 as Georgia Southern took control with a 15-2 run at the end of the first half to open a 13-point halftime lead. The Eagles shot a season-high 66.7 percent (10 for 15) from 3-point range and 53.8 percent overall as they topped the century mark for the first time this season against a Division I opponent and third time overall.

Brown, who ranks 10th in the Sun Belt in scoring (17.2 ppg) and third in assists (4.8), hit all three of his 3-point attempts after going 2 for 13 in his previous three games. One of three 2,000-point scorers in school history, Brown has averaged 15.0 points in seven matchups with the Warhawks and totaled 22 and seven assists in Georgia Southern’s 79-78 win Jan. 10.

Jackson has recorded back-to-back 20-point games while hitting 7 of 15 from 3-point range, raising his season scoring mark to 16.0 per game. The Eagles lead the Sun Belt in scoring and shooting at 84.3 points per game and 49.9 percent, ranking 14th and fifth nationally in those respective categories.

Georgia Southern has won four of its last five conference road games, averaging 86.0 points while shooting 44.0 percent from 3-point range (40 for 91) in that stretch.

Warhawks going for sweep of Georgia schools

Louisiana-Monroe (12-10, 5-5) did its part to tighten the Sun Belt standings by defeating conference-leader Georgia State 82-76 on Wednesday night.

Daishon Smith finished with 36 points, eight rebounds, seven steals, and three assists while hitting all 11 of his free throws. It was the second 30-point game of the season for Smith, who is tied for third in the Sun Belt in scoring at 21.0 per game.

“He had tremendous energy all game,” Warhawks coach Keith Richard told the school’s official website. “Obviously, he made some big plays late. … His driving ability was a big story for us. We needed some 2-point goals in this game and I thought he got enough for us.”

Smith had a strong game in last month’s loss to Georgia Southern, finishing with 27 points, six rebounds, and five assists. The Wichita State transfer leads the Sun Belt with 68 3-pointers made and is sixth in 3-point shooting percentage (43.3).

The Warhawks have been solid at home, going 9-1 at home versus Division I opponents. They are shooting 40.1 percent from 3-point range and averaging 83.1 points in those games while averaging 10.7 treys.

Louisiana-Monroe has gone 3-7 against Georgia Southern since becoming conference rivals in 2014, and six of the games have been decided by four or fewer points.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

While the Eagles are coming off a solid win and offensive effort, Louisiana-Monroe has been a tough out at home and riding high after taking down the Sun Belt leaders. The Warhawks are also out for revenge after losing on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Jackson in last month’s game at Georgia Southern that capped a rally from 10 down in the final 12:09.

Both teams are playing well, but after gaining revenge against the Panthers on Wednesday night, look for the Warhawks to complete the sweep here.

Prediction: Pick: Louisiana-Monroe pick ’em

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

It would not be surprising to see this number inch higher during the overnight. The teams played to 157 in the first meeting — narrowly missing the over/under of 159 — and the Warhawks have played to 158 and higher in four of their six Sun Belt home games.

Georgia Southern has averaged 165.5 points in its 11 road games thus far and 162.0 in conference road games. The Eagles have also reached 172 and higher in three of their last four games outside Statesboro.

Prediction: Pick: OVER 162.5 points

Half-Time Side Pick
Rating:

The Warhawks have yet to trail at home against Division I opponents, leading by four or more points in all nine games and by nine or more in three of its five conference home games. Though the Eagles led by 13 at Louisiana on Wednesday night after 20 minutes, it was the first time they held a halftime lead in six road games in Sun Belt play.

Prediction: Louisiana-Monroe pick ’em

Half-Time Total Bet
Rating:

The teams played to a 71-point first half at Georgia Southern, and the Eagles are coming off a 51-point performance in the first 20 minutes of their win at Louisiana. The Warhawks have been held under 40 just once in their five home games in conference play and have reached 74 or higher in three of their last four games at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

Prediction: Pick: OVER 76.5 points
