The #2 seeded Oklahoma State Cowboys will host the #7 seeded Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in the first round of the NIT Tournament Tuesday night from the Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, OK. The Cowboys went 8-10 in Big 12 play and lost to Kansas in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament. The Eagles posted a 12-2 conference record and lost in the finals of the A-Sun Conference Tournament.

FGCU Surrenders Season-High 108 Points in Championship Loss

The FGCU Eagles had a solid season however they were not able to close strong  in a 108-96 loss to Lipscomb in the A-Sun Tournament Championship game. The Eagles played awful defense in the loss, allowing Lipscomb to shoot a stunning 65%. Zach Johnson was tremendous in the defeat, accumulating 37 points on 10 for 19 shooting. The junior guard has shot above 50% in three straight games, and he is currently averaging 15.9 points per game. Eagles’ top scorer Brandon Goodwin had several big games this season which included a 34 point effort on a 12 for 22 shooting performance in the loss in the title game. The senior guard has scored at least 27 points in four out of his last six games, and he is currently averaging 18.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.

The Eagles dominated their opponents for a majority of conference play and they went on a tremendous 13 game winning streak at one point. They are positioned at 132nd overall in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball rankings. FGCU is very dangerous offensively, averaging 81.7 points, good for 13th in the nation. They are allowing an average of 71.6 points, placing them 157th overall.

OK State Determined After NCAA Tournament Snub

The Oklahoma State Cowboys will look to shake off their disappointment from their omission from the NCAA Tournament by going on a run in the NIT. They are coming off an 82-68 loss to Kansas in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tourney. Cowboys’ top scorer Jeffrey Carroll scored a team-high 17 points in the quarterfinal loss. The senior guard is only shooting 41% on the season, and he is currently posting 15.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Kendall Smith played well down the final stretch of the season, averaging 15.7 points in his last seven games played. The senior guard owns a solid 39.4% clip from beyond the arc, and he stands second in team scoring with 12.9 points per game.

The Cowboys have won three out of their last four games overall including an 82-64 win against Kansas in their regular season finale. They are placed at 56th in the country in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball rankings, and it was a surprise to many to seem them left out of the NCAA Tournament. Oklahoma State is averaging 76.4 points per game, ranking them 94th overall. They are allowing 73.1 points, positioning them 194th overall.

The FGCU Eagles are:

  • No Key Trends

The Oklahoma State Cowboys are:

  • 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
  • 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up loss.
  • 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS loss.

I am taking Oklahoma State in this matchup. FGCU just surrendered 108 points to Lipscomb in their latest action, and they have allowed at least 90 points in three out of their last six games. They will be up against a potent OK State offense that has put up big points against some strong defensive teams this season. They scored over 80 points against Kansas twice this season, and they scored 79 points against a strong Texas Tech defense, so they should pour on the points in this one. Furthermore, OK State is playing strong defense, allowing an average of only 68.8 points in their last six games.
