Georgia State will try to pick up its first win of the season when it travels to Army on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers have played a tough schedule this year, facing South Carolina, North Carolina and Coastal Carolina. Army lost its first two games of the season before bouncing back with a 49-10 win over Villanova its last time out.

Panthers eyeing first win of season

Georgia State will be on the road for the second time this season, as it lost to South Carolina in a 35-14 final in its season opener. The Panthers went on to lose three consecutive home games after that, including losses to North Carolina, Charlotte and Coastal Carolina. They were 19.5-point favorites in the 42-41 loss to the 49ers, but they were underdogs in the other three losses. Their offense has not been their weakness this season, as they have scored at least 24 points in three of their four games. They put up 28 points against North Carolina in Week 2, while scoring 24 points last week.

Senior quarterback Darren Grainger has completed 52.7% of his passes for 871 yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions, so he will be looking to improve on his efficiency. Junior wide receiver Jamari Thrash has caught 21 passes for 381 yards, while sophomore wideout Robert Lewis has 13 catches for 271 yards and five touchdowns. Four players have rushed for at least 165 yards, with Grainger showing his dual-threat ability (185 rushing yards). Their defense needs to show some massive improvement this week, as they have allowed 35-plus points in every game this season. They are giving up more than 400 yards per game, including 141.4 on the ground.

Army coming off bye week

Army will be looking for its first winning streak of the season after blowing out Villanova in a 49-10 final last week. The Black Knights lost to Coastal Carolina and UTSA in their first two games this season, with both games being shootouts. They were 1.5-point underdogs to the Chanticleers and 2-point dogs to the Roadrunners. Army bounced back with a tremendous performance in Week 3, easily covering the 14-point spread in the 39-point win. Their patented rushing attack combined for 472 yards on 55 carries, averaging 8.6 yards per attempt. Junior running back Tyson Riley had a team-high 158 yards on 21 carries.

Sophomore running back Tyrell Robinson has been the top rusher on the team, turning 23 carries into 249 yards and a touchdown. Army continues to run its triple-option offense, throwing just one pass attempt in the win over Villanova. However, senior quarterback Cade Ballard gives his team a passing threat as well. He has thrown for 309 yards and two touchdowns, completing 67% of his passes. Junior running back Ay’Jaun Marshall and senior running back Braheam Murphy have each gone over 100 receiving yards. Army has been a tough team to slow down at home in recent years, winning 15 of its last 17 home games.

Insiders Status:

This is a picture-perfect spot to back Army as a one-touchdown favorite at home. There are so many compelling reasons to this handicap, including the scheduling situation. Army bounced back from two close losses with a dominant performance two weeks ago, and then it had a week off to prepare for this game. Georgia State has faced a gauntlet of teams in the first four weeks of the season, and it is on the road for just the second time. The Panthers are beat up heading into this game, while Army is rested. Georgia State has struggled to slow down opposing rushing attacks, and now it has to face the top rushing offense in the country. I don’t see the Panthers getting off the field more than once or twice on Saturday, which would make it nearly impossible for them to cover the spread.

Prediction: Army -7

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Army generally plays in games with low totals due to its rushing attack bleeding the clock, but I am happy to back the over in this game. I expect the Black Knights to score on almost every possession against a bad Georgia State defense, which would make it difficult to justify a wager on the under. The Panthers have been able to put up some points of their own this season, and they should be able to score against an Army defense that allowed 38 points to Coastal Carolina and 41 points to UTSA. Georgia State won’t have enough firepower to cover the spread, but it will do enough to get this game over the total.

Prediction: Over 54.5
