Southern Miss takes on North Texas at Apogee Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Mean Green’s incredible start has slowed up recently, but they did pull out the victory over UTEP last week. The Golden Eagles had a week off after falling in a tight contest at Auburn. UNT is 3-2 both straight up and ATS since these two have been in Conference USA.
Adams questionable with leg injury for Golden Eagles
It’s been an up-and-down season for Southern Miss so far, not having an impressive win yet they were competitive against one of the top SEC teams, Auburn, last time out. The defense has been the strong point of the team, holding teams to under 300 yards on average and slowing down the opposition’s passing game while thriving on theirs. The Golden Eagles average a whopping 319 passing yards per contest (14th nationally).
Quarterback Jack Abraham has been impressively efficient, completing 70.9 percent of his passes with a ratio of 11 touchdowns to 5 interceptions. One thing to keep in mind is the status of wide receiver Jaylond Adams, who’s questionable for this contest. He’s the second-best receiver on the team with 262 yards on 25 catches with two touchdowns.
Will the high-flying Mean Green offense make a return?
North Texas scores over 40 points per game and sits at just under a top 20 squad nationally in that category. It was much higher after blazing through their first four opponents with 44 or more points scored, but they’ve been held to 27 points in back-to-back games. It wasn’t good enough in a tough home loss to Louisiana Tech, but they rebounded 27-24 victory over UTEP. That’s not necessarily a good result, as the Miners have now lost their 18th straight game.

Similar to Southern Miss, an issue that the Mean Green have are being able to stay on the field when things go awry. Their passing attack is electric, ranking in as ninth-best in the country, but will it hold up? They average 154.5 rushing yards, which is just 87th nationally, and they’ve fell under that mark in recent games.
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games in October
- Under is 7-3 in their last 10 games in October
- 6-2 ATS in their last 8 conference games
- 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games against teams with a winning record
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Golden Eagles have had a lot of bad breaks with weather issues and a scheduled bye week. Assuming Adams used this time to heal up and get back on the field, there’s a good chance they’ll keep this inside of one possession when nearing the conclusion. North Texas is also not playing up to their potential and they should be well-rested enough to take advantage of the Mean Green.
Prediction: Southern Miss +8.5
Full-Game Total Pick
North Texas still hasn’t been able to get past the over despite their high-scoring offense, and these totals have even been adjusted now that they’re in conference play. The under has been a frequent result, cashing in three of their last four meetings.
