The Utah Utes will host the Arizona State Sun Devils in a Pac-12 match-up on Saturday. According to CBS Sports, the Sun Devils are rated No. 20, and the Utes are No. 39 in the nation.

Arizona State will enter this game 5-1 overall, 3-0 in the Pac-12, and 3-3 against the spread. Utah is 3-2 overall, 2-0 in the conference, and 1-4 against the spread.

Utah and Arizona State last met in October 2019, when the Utes won 21-3 as a 16-point favorite in Salt Lake City.

Arizona State looking for fourth straight win

Arizona State is currently on a three-game winning streak after beating Stanford 28-10 last Friday as a 13.5-point favorite. The Sun Devils outgained the Standford Cardinal 430 to 369 in total yardage, led by quarterback Jayden Daniels who completed 14 of 23 passes for 175 yards and rushed for 76 yards on 13 carries, with a touchdown rushing and passing in the win.

In the Pac-12, Arizona State has also defeated Colorado 35-13 as a 14-point home favorite and UCLA 42-23 as a three-point dog this season.

In the non-conference games, Arizona State opened up the 2021 season with a 41-14 win as a 45-point favorite against Southern Utah, followed by a 37-10 win as a 34.5-point favorite against UNLV. On September 18, the Sun Devils lost their only game, 27-17, as a three-point road favorite to BYU.

Arizona State is third in the Pac-12 offensively, averaging 440.7 yards per game, third racking up 212 rushing yards, and seventh with 228.7 passing yards per game. The Sun Devils lead the Pac-12, holding opponents to 299 total yards, ranking third with 181.3 yards and 117.7 rushing yards per game allowed on defense.

The Arizona State offense is led by dual-threat quarterback Jayden Daniels who has completed 70.1% of his passes for 1,269 yards with four touchdowns and three picks. Daniels is also second on the team with 369 rushing yards on 6.7 yards per attempt. Leading the ground game is running back Rashaad White with 421 yards on 5.5 yards per attempt and a team-best nine touchdowns.

Utah looking to build off win over USC

The Utes took the field last Saturday against USC with heavy hearts as they played for the first time since sophomore defensive back Aaron Lowe was fatally shot at a house party on September 26. Utah came away with a 42-26 point road win as a three-point underdog to the Trojans, covering the spread for the first time this season. Utah dominated most of the game and led 35-10 after three quarters. In his second start, sophomore quarterbackCameron Risingcompleted 22 of 28 passes for 306 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 27 yards with another touchdown. Sophomore running back Tavion Thomas rushed for 113 yards on 16 attempts with a touchdown.

Charlie Brewerwas the Utes starting quarterback in the first three games but left the program after being benched during a 33-31 loss as an eight-point road favorite against San Diego State on September 18. In Utah's other three games this year, they have beaten Weber State 40-17 as a 30-point favorite, lost to BYU 26-17 as a seven-point favorite, and beat Washington State 24-13 as a 15-point favorite.

Utah is seventh in the Pac-12 averaging 390.6 yards of total offense, sixth in the conference averaging 221.8 passing yards and fifth with 168.8 yards rushing per game. Defensively, the Utes are third in the Pac-12 holding the opposition to just 339.4 yards per game, fifth with 221 yards allowed against the pass, and 128.4 yards against the rush.

I expect this to be an outstanding game that will be decided in the last five minutes. With the line currently set as a pick-em, it's safe to say the oddsmakers agree.

Both teams have been strong defensively, with Arizona State ranking 17th in the country with 4.6 yards per play allowed against FBS opponents and Utah 23rd with 4.7 yards per play allowed. Although this matchup should be close, I expect the experience of quarterback Jayden Daniels to be the difference, as he leads a Sun Devils offense that is more explosive. Arizona State ranks fifth in the nation with 7.1 yards per play picked up offensively against FBS completion, and Utah is 56th, averaging 5.7 yards per play.

Take the Sun Devils to earn a hard-fought win on Saturday.

Although both defenses have played well this season, there are too many explosive offensive playmakers in this contest for me to expect a low-scoring game. Arizona State averages 39 points per game and is in the nation's top 10 regarding average yards accumulated per play. The Sun Devils have also scored 28 points or more in five of their six games this season and have scored 35 or more in six of their last eight games going back through the previous year.

The Utah offense is showing improvement behind quarterback Cameron Rising and average 30.8 points per game offensively this season. I will take the over.
