Week eight of college football continues as Southern Miss travels to Joe Aillet Stadium to take on Louisiana Tech on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 3:30 P.M. This will be the 51st meeting between these two teams. The last meeting occurred last season when the Golden Eagles beat the Bulldogs at home by a score of 21-20.
Southern Miss Looks To Keep Winning Against Conference RivalAs a whole, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles have been pretty good up to this point. After entering the season with hopes of competing for a conference title, Southern Miss enters this game with an undefeated record in conference play. In addition, the Golden Eagles already have four wins so they are well on their way to qualifying for another bowl game this season. However, Southern Miss is not in sole possession of first place in its division so a victory here would definitely help its chances of making it into the conference title game. Luckily for the Golden Eagles, this game is against an opponent that they have dominated in recent years. Specifically, Southern Miss has won each of the last four meetings against Louisiana Tech and it will look to continue its winning ways on Saturday.
Leading the Golden Eagles offensively will be junior quarterback Jack Abraham who has been great so far this season. Specifically, he has 1,936 passing yards along with 12 passing touchdowns. In addition, he has also been extremely efficient on the ground in the redzone as he has three rushing touchdowns. Last season, Abraham completed over 82% of his passes against Louisiana Tech so he will look for a similar level of success in this game.
Southern Miss' biggest threat on defense is senior defensive back D.Q. Thomas who has been great through the first six games of the season. Specifically, he has a team-high two interceptions along with two sacks. In addition, he also has 45 total tackles which is tied for the most on the team. Last season, Thomas did virtually nothing against Louisiana Tech so he will look to make a much larger impact against the Bulldogs this season.
Louisiana Tech Looks To Clinch Bowl Game AppearanceSo far this season, the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs have been virtually perfect up to this point. After entering the season with hopes of another solid season, Louisiana Tech has lived up to those expectations as it has won five of its first six games. In addition, its lone loss came against a ranked Texas team in week one so it is currently on a five-game winning streak. Now, Louisiana Tech has a chance to clinch another bowl game appearance with a victory on Saturday. This game also has huge implications on a potential conference title game appearance for the Bulldogs so one has to wonder if they will be able to handle that amount of pressure against a conference rival at home.
Leading the Bulldogs offensively will be senior quarterback J'Mar Smith who has been solid so far this season. Specifically, he has 1,557 passing yards along with nine passing touchdowns. In addition, he has also been effective on the ground as he has 160 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. However, Smith has never been able to defeat Southern Miss in his career so this game will be his final shot at revenge.
Louisiana Tech's biggest threat on defense is junior defensive back Amik Robertson who has been great through the first six games of the season. Specifically, he has a team-high two interceptions along with a team-high two defensive touchdowns. In addition, he also has 26 solo tackles which is the second-most on the team. Robertson is a threat to score anytime he has the ball in his hands so Southern Miss will need to be careful when throwing the ball in his direction.
- Road team is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
- Bulldogs are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS win.
