Charlotte and Middle Tennessee, two middling teams in the Conference USA East, battle it out on Saturday afternoon at Johnny “Red” Floyd Stadium. The Blue Raiders fell in a close contest to Florida International after winning two in a row. The 49ers blew out WKU last time out.
49ers quarterback is questionable with an ankle injury
It’s been a rough streak for Charlotte’s defense, but they finally put things together in a 40-14 blowout against Western Kentucky. They’ve actually held opponents on average to 329.3 yards per game, which is 26th-best nationally, but they still tend to give up a lot of points (28.5 per contest). They’ve suffered blowouts against teams UMass and UAB recently, but they were able to keep a bad Hilltoppers squad off the scoreboard at least.
The Point After:
— Charlotte Football (@CharlotteFTBL) October 14, 2018
The 49ers could be without their quarterback, Chris Reynolds, on Saturday. He’s currently listed as questionable with an ankle injury. His time was split with senior Evan Shirreffs, who played in his first game of the season and completed 5-of-7 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown. Victor Tucker leads all receivers with 466 yards and 2 TDs on 36 catches.
Blue Raiders also lost their quarterback in first CUSA loss
Middle Tennessee suffered their first conference loss against Florida International last time out, 24-21. They blew an eight-point lead with just over 19 minutes to go in the game after a back-and-forth affair in the first half. The Blue Raiders average 130 rushing yards per game, which is just 111th nationally, but they stepped up with 187 yards on 40 carries. Unfortunately, a quarterback injury hindered their passing game.
After completing 6-of-7 passes for a short 28 yards, Brent Stockstill had to leave the game early and the backup came in to only produce 114 yards on 9-of-20 passing with an interception. Stockstill, who is completing 67.4 percent of his passes on the year with a ratio of 10 touchdowns to 3 interceptions, is questionable with a lower-body injury.
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing less than 100 yards rushing in prior game
- Under is 13-5-1 in their last 19 games overall
- 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games in October
- 6-2 ATS in their last 8 conference games
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
It’s best to hold off on betting this game until the quarterback situation becomes clearer for both teams. However, a glaring advantage the 49ers have is in their rush defense — they’ve held teams to just 92.2 rushing yards per game this season (6th nationally).
Prediction: Charlotte +16.5
Full-Game Total Pick
Once again, picking the total mostly depends on the availability of both quarterbacks, especially for Middle Tennessee. A reasonably low total makes this a difficult one to choose, but it would be wiser decision to side with the under as both offenses could be hindered.
Prediction: Under 52.5
