The Marshall Thundering Herd will host the Charlotte 49ers in a C-USA clash Saturday afternoon from the Joan C. Edwards Stadium. The 49ers fell 14-3 against Tennessee last week, and the Thundering Herd are coming off a 26-24 road loss to Southern Mississippi in their previous contest. Marshall registered a 14-3 road win over Charlotte last season.
Charlotte’s Defense Shines in Loss to Tennessee
The Charlotte 49ers head into this contest tied with Marshall in the C-USA East with a 3-2 conference record. Charlotte played outstanding defense in a 14-3 road loss against Tennessee last week. Evan Shirreffs only completed 13 of 25 passes for 152 yards in the defeat. The senior QB has taken the #1 QB role in place of the injured Chris Reynolds who is out for the year. Shirreffs has tallied 557 passing yards with a 2:4 TD to INT ratio on the season. A player to watch for is 49ers RB Benny LeMay. The junior RB is a big threat, accumulating 826 rushing yards on the year, and he has rushed for over 80 yards in three straight games. Charlotte’s leading receiver Victor Tucker did not play against Tennessee last week due to a hamstring injury and he is questionable for this one. The freshman WR has brought in 566 receiving yards this season. The Charlotte offense has been a weakness this season, and they rely on their defense to win games.
The 49ers are playing outstanding defense. They limited Tennessee of the SEC to only 14 points last week, and they are holding opponents to an average of only 304 total yards per game led by a stifling rush defense. Charlotte is averaging 20.6 points, ranking them 122nd overall. They are allowing an average of 24.8 points, pegging them 53rd in the FBS.
Marshall Falls to Southern Miss in Green’s Return
The Marshall Thundering Herd had a two-game winning streak come to a halt in their 26-24 road loss to Southern Mississippi last week. Isaiah Green entered the game in the second half, marking his return after a three-game absence in the defeat. The talented freshman QB had recorded at least 270 passing yards in all four games before going down with an injury, and he has registered 1277 passing yards with an 9:7 TD to INT ratio on the season. Marshall’s leading rusher Tyler King (655 rushing yards) did not suit up last week with an undisclosed injury, and he is questionable for this one. Keion Davis, who has tallied 259 rushing yards, will see a bulk of the carries if King does not play. The Herd’ top receiver Tyre Brady only made one reception in last week’s loss. The senior WR has tallied over 100 receiving yards on three occasions this season, and he has accrued 588 receiving yards on the year.

The Marshall offense has been inconsistent all season, and they have only scored more than 30 points in two out of their last six games. The Herd’ defense is their greatest strength as a team. They are outstanding against the run which included only 89 rushing yards against Southern Mississippi last week. Marshall remains one win away from bowl eligibility. They are scoring an average of 28.5 points, ranking them 71st in the FBS. The Thundering Herd are allowing an average of only 23.1 points, good for 38th in the FBS.
The Marshall Thundering Herd are:
- 1-6 ATS in their last 7 home games.
- 4-10 ATS in their last 14 November games.
- under is 22-8 in their last 30 conference games.
The Charlotte 49ers are:
- 5-1 ATS in their last 6 conference games.
- 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
I am taking the points with Charlotte in this one. Charlotte is playing tremendous defense, and they have been very competitive all season against tough opponents. They just limited Tennessee of the SEC to only 14 points, and they should be able to neutralize the Marshall offense. Charlotte features a strong pass defense that is holding opponents to 222 passing yards per game, and their rush defense ranks third in the entire country.
Furthermore, the Marshall offense is having an inconsistent season. They are only averaging 375 total yards per game, and they only managed 250 total yards against Southern Mississippi last week. Charlotte is 4-0 ATS in their last four games, and they should keep this one very close.
Prediction: Charlotte 49ers
Full-Game Total Pick
Points should be at a premium in this contest considering the strength of both defensive units. Charlotte has only allowed an average of 16.5 points in their last four games, and the under is 4-1 in the 49ers’s last five games.
Also, Marshall is also playing terrific defense, holding their opponents to an average of only 17.7 points in their last three games, and Charlotte owns a weak offense that is only averaging 20.6 points. The under is 11-4 in the Herd’ last 15 games against a team with a losing record, and it should hit again in this contest.
Full-Game Prop Bet
I am taking the under on the Marshall team total. Charlotte is quietly having an outstanding season from a defensive standpoint. Their first down defense has been terrific. They have only allowed 137 first downs, ranking them seventh in the country. Marshall QB QB Isaiah Green is only completing 54% of his passes, and the 49ers feature a solid pass defense and a tremendous rush defense. Also, Charlotte has allowed 17 or fewer points in three out of their last four games.
Prediction: Marshall Team Total: Under 28
Half-Time Side Pick
I am taking Marshall on the halftime line. Charlotte struggles to score points in the first half, averaging only eight points in the opening half on the season, ranking them down at 126th in the FBS. In addition, the 49ers are allowing an average of 15.9 points in the first half. Charlotte is a strong second half team. They are averaging more points in the final half, and they are limiting opponents to an average of only 10.8 points in the second half this season.
Prediction: Marshall -7
Half-Time Total Bet
The under on the halftime total is also a strong play. I anticipate a low scoring game throughout the entire contest. Marshall is only averaging 12.7 points in the first half, and as mentioned, Charlotte is having trouble scoring in the opening half. The defense on both teams should prevail in both halves.
Prediction: Under 21
Half-Time Prop Prediction
I am taking the under on the first quarter total. Both teams have generated very little offense in the first quarter. Marshall is only averaging 3.9 points in the first quarter this season, and Charlotte has not been much better with only 4.1 points in the opening quarter. Also, both teams are playing strong defense right now.
Prediction: First Quarter Total: Under
