Ball State Cardinals (2-6, 0-4 MAC) vs. Eastern Michigan Eagles (2-6, 0-4 MAC)
NCAA Football: Thursday, November 2nd, 7:00 pm EST
Line: Eastern Michigan -24
The Cardinals of Ball State head to Eastern Michigan to take on the Eagles in a battle of winless MAC teams. The Cardinals have been downright terrible, getting crushed the last four games. They lost to Western Michigan 55-3, Akron 31-3, Central Michigan 56-9, and last week Toledo blew them out 58-17. During that span, they have been outscored by a total of 200-32. That’s pretty bad.
Eastern Michigan is also winless in conference, but the lines makers obviously think they are a way better team as they are a 24 point favorite on Thursday. I can’t remember the last time I saw a winless conference team a 24 point favorite at home versus another conference team. Their last six losses have all been by a touchdown or less, which is quite amazing, and there last three have been by three, three, and one point.
Ball State loses again
It’s really amazing that Ball State actually has two wins on the year. Over their last five games (all losses) they have been outscored by nearly 200 points. They look like one of the worst teams in college football. In their latest loss, Toledo actually took it easy on them in only putting up 58 points. They easily could have scored 70 or more.
They put up over 600 yards of total offense and could do whatever they wanted against the Cardinal defense. They started slow, but put up 48 points in the middle two quarters and then slowed up in the fourth. On the bright side, the Cardinals put up their most points in four games, despite only throwing for 105 yards. They rushed for 204 yards and that’s what they will have to do well to have a chance on Thursday.
These losses are tougher than most
Eastern Michigan losses are tougher than most because every single game is coming down to the final minutes. They have lost six straight games (after winning their first two of the year) and all six games have been by seven points or less. That’s pretty hard to do. The losses have been by seven, five, four, three, three, and one. That’s a total of being outscored by only 23 points in six losses.
The latest loss, to Northern Illinois, may have been the toughest. The Eagles had a 14 point lead and looked on their way to a win, before the Huskies came back and forced overtime. In OT, the Eagles took the lead with a field goal, but the Huskies responded with a touchdown and it was another loss for Eastern Michigan. They now face an anemic Ball State team and hopefully won’t be playing another close one.
The Ball State Cardinals are:
- 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games on fieldturf
- 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games following an ATS loss
- 2-5 ATS in their last 7 versus teams with losing records
The Eastern Michigan Eagles are:
- 6-1 ATS in their last 7 following a straight up loss
- 17-5 ATS in their last 22 overall
- 12-4 ATS in their last 16 games on fieldturf
I can’t believe I’m laying 24 points with a team who hasn’t lost in conference, but Ball State has been so bad, I think it’s the right play. Eastern Michigan will break through with their first win and it will be by 30 + points.
