The Arizona State Sun Devils (3-8, 4-7 ATS, 4-7 O/U) collide with the Arizona Wildcats (4-7, 4-7 ATS, 6-5 O/U) in the Duel in the Desert rivalry game on Friday afternoon. The Sun Devils were dealt a home loss by Oregon State last week. The Wildcats lost a home decision against Washington State in their previous action. The Sun Devils posted a 38-15 home win against the Wildcats last season.
Arizona State Charged with Third Straight Loss
The Arizona State Sun Devils are concluding a disastrous season. They had big expectations heading into the year but a poor start led to the dismissal of the head coach Herm Edwards after losing to Eastern Michigan of the MAC in week three. Arizona State has lost three in a row after a 31-7 defeat against Oregon State last week in a bout that had ASU labeled as seven-point dogs. The conference wins occurred against Colorado and Washington. The Sun Devils have not covered in four consecutive games.
Emory Jones and Trenton Bourguet have seen action at QB. Last week, it was Bourguet under center. The junior QB has been solid, eclipsing 300 passing yards in two of his five games played, and has recorded 1114 passing yards and an 8:4 TD to INT ratio. Jones was the #1 entering the season and the junior QB has 1533 passing yards and a 7:4 TD to INT ratio.
Xazavian Valladay has been a bright spot this season. The senior RB has surpassed 100 rushing yards in three out of his last four clashes and now has accrued 1095 rushing yards on a stellar average of 5.7 yards per carry. The passing game relies on Elijah Badger. The sophomore WR has made 17 catches in his last three games and has registered 774 receiving yards. The Arizona State offense has been hit or miss all season and has only scored 25 points in their last two games.

The Sun Devils' defense has been the culprit in many of the losses. They have allowed at least 30 points in all but two conference games. The unit hasn’t been able to contain the pass or run. They are pegged 84th in pass defense and 102nd in rush defense. Arizona State is averaging 25.3 points, landing them 85th. They are conceding an average of 30.8 points, positioning them 108th
Arizona Hit with Sixth Conference Defeat
The Arizona Wildcats are going to come at least one win away from bowl eligibility. They had a rough four-game losing streak in October that affected their chances of playing in a bowl game. Arizona snapped that slide with a road win at UCLA but could not get the job done in a 31-20 home loss to Washington State last week. They were 3.5-point dogs in that one. Arizona has covered the spread in one out of their last three games.
Jayden De Laura continues to post big numbers. The sophomore QB has accrued at least 300 passing yards in six of 11 games on the season and now has 3485 passing yards accompanied by a strong 25:12 TD to INT ratio on the season.
Arizona does not run often. Michael Wiley had 97 rushing yards in the win against UCLA which was a season-best. The junior RB has posted 557 rushing yards on 5.5 yards per rush. The Wildcats have a stacked receiving group led by Dorian Singer. The sophomore WR had 176 receiving yards last week and now leads the squad with a whopping 1014 yards. The Arizona offense isn’t to blame for many of the losses.
The Wildcats' defense is among the worst in the entire FBS. They have surrendered at least 30 points in all but three games this season. Last week, they gave up only 354 total yards but 31 points against a subpar offense. The pass defense is marked 100th while the rush defense is 125th. Arizona is scoring an average of 30.2 points, ranking them 52nd. They are conceding an average of 36.6 points, pegging them 125th.
Best Bets for this Game
Full-Game Side Bet
The Arizona State Sun Devils will be competitive in this rivalry game. It’s been a daunting schedule in their last three games but they are generating points against poor defensive foes and have a decent offense. ASU scored 45 against Washington, 42 against Colorado, and 36 against UCLA. The passing offense is averaging a solid 240 passing and the Wildcats are pegged 99th against the pass.
Furthermore, the Wildcats are struggling. They have now lost five out of their last six games. They rely heavily on the strong passing offense led by Jayden De Laura but the Sun Devils have been effective in defending the pass recently. They held Washington State to 219 passing yards two weeks ago and Oregon State to only 221 passing yards last week.
Full-Game Total Pick
This will be a shootout. The Sun Devils' offense ranks above average in many offensive categories and should have no issues solving one of the worst defensive units in the FBS. The Wildcats have squandered at least 39 points in six out of their last ten games. They are allowing an average of 461 total yards per game.
In addition, the Sun Devils are not a good defensive squad either. They have squandered at least 31 points in six of their eight conference games. The Wildcats have a potent offense that was able to collect 39 against Washington and 37 points at USC. The over is also 7-1 in the Sun Devils' last eight road games against a team with a losing home record.
