A pair of teams from the East Division of the Sun Belt collide on the gridiron down in the Peach State. The Appalachian State Mountaineers are the road as they make the trip to face the Georgia Southern Eagles Saturday evening. Appalachian State knocked off Old Dominion 27-14 on the road last Saturday in their previous contest though they failed to cover as a 17-point favorite in the game. Georgia Southern suffered a third straight loss as they were dumped 23-10 at home by Marshall last Saturday, failing to cover as a 5.5-point underdog in their most recent game. In the all-time series between the teams, the Mountaineers own a 5-3 advantage and have won the last two meetings, including a 27-3 home victory in the most recent matchup on November 27, 2021.

Appalachian State Mountaineers Look to Close Season on Positive Note

Appalachian State snapped a two-game skid as they jumped on Old Dominion early before cruising to the victory. The Mountaineers improved to 6-5 on the season and stand 3-4 in the East Division of the Sun Belt with the victory. Against Old Dominion, Appalachian State led 10-0 after the opening quarter, 24-0 at the half and 27-0 after three quarters before the Monarchs tallied a pair of touchdowns in the final 7:05 to make the final score more respectable. The Mountaineers rolled up a 498-394 advantage in total offense, picked up 24 first downs while allowing 20 and controlled the clock by a 32:42 to 27:18 margin. They also forced the lone turnover in the game as well.

The Mountaineers enter this game 43rd in the nation in passing offense as they average 250.7 yards per game through the air and tied for 39th in the nation by running for 188.8 yards per game. Appalachian State is 32nd in the FBS in scoring offense with 33.7 points per game and 49th in scoring defense as they allow 24.5 points per contest. Chase Brice is 204 of 322 passing for 2,668 yards with 27 touchdowns and six interceptions this season. He has run for 77 yards and four scores on the ground. Ryan Burger (four of six, 40 yards, 23 rush yards) and Brady McBride (two of three, 33 yards) have seen limited work this season. Camerun Peoples leads the run game with 101 carries for 593 yards and five scores this season. Nate Noel (75 carries, 433 yards, three TD), Daetrich Harrington (72 carries, 315 yards, three TD) and Ahmani Marshall (56 carries, 298 yards, three TD) have all seen their share of work in the run game as well. Dashaun Davis leads the team in the receiving department as he has hauled in 36 balls for 426 yards and three scores this season. Christian Horn (31 catches, team-high 545 yards, four TD), Kaedin Robinson (22 receptions, 370 yards, two TD) and Dalton Stroman (18 grabs, 318 yards, four TD) each have exceeded the 300-yard receiving mark this season. Michael Hughes has connected on all 46 extra point attempts and five of seven field goal attempts with a long of 40 this year.

Georgia Southern Eagles Try to Snap Slide at Three

Georgia Southern has been up and down this season: they own wins over Nebraska and James Madison though they enter this game on a three-game slide after falling to Marshall last week. The Eagles fell to 5-6 overall on the season and stand 2-5 in the Sun Belt’s East Division. Against Marshall, Georgia Southern never led as they trailed 6-3 after the opening quarter and by a 20-3 margin in the second quarter before closing to within 10 at the half. In the second half, Georgia Southern couldn’t generate any more points and that proved to be their undoing. The Eagles were beaten 529-384 in total offense, lost the first down battle 29-20, saw Marshall control the clock by a 36:54 to 23:06 margin and committed the game’s only two turnovers.

For the year, the Eagles are 8th in the nation in passing offense with 322.3 yards per game through the air and 73rd in rushing offense with 144.6 yards per contest on the ground. Georgia Southern is 39th in the FBS in scoring offense with 32.1 points per game while they are 108th in the nation in scoring defense by allowing 30.9 points per contest. Kyle Vantrease has completed 308 of 507 passes for 3,512 yards with 22 touchdowns and 14 interceptions this season. Jalen White leads the ground game with 162 carries for 914 yards and 10 scores this season. Gerald Green (86 carries, 475 yards, six TD) and OJ Arnold (33 carries, 189 yards, TD) have seen work in the run game as well. Khaleb Hood leads the team with 70 receptions for 793 yards and three scores. Derwin Burgess Jr. (58 catches, 717 yards, seven TD), Jeremy Singleton (56 catches, 581 yards, two TD) and Amare Jones (35 grabs, 483 yards, six TD) have each gone over the 400-yard mark in receiving yards this season. Alex Raynor has hit 42 of 43 extra point attempts and 15 of 17 field goal attempts with a long of 46 this season.

Insiders Status:

Georgia Southern has done plenty of damage through the air this season but Appalachian State has been decent defending the pass. The Mountaineers hold opposing quarterbacks to a 58.5% completion rate this season along with an average of 204.3 yards per game through the air. Meanwhile, Georgia Southern has major issues on the defensive side of the ball and they have to contend with an Appalachian State team that is more than capable of doing damage on the ground. The Eagles have given up an average of 227.5 yards per game and 5.5 yards per carry on the ground in addition to 23 scores. That inability to stop the ground game proves to be too much for the Eagles to handle. Give the points and take Appalachian State in this contest.

Prediction: Appalachian State Mountaineers -4.5

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Appalachian State comes into this game having seen the under hit in six of their 11 games on the season. The Mountaineers have split their four road games in relation to the total this season entering this game. Georgia Southern has stayed under the mark in six of their 11 games on the year entering this contest. The Eagles have gone over the total in three of their five home games on the year. Appalachian State has stayed under the number in four of their last five games coming into this finale while Georgia Southern has three unders in their last four games. Based on what we’ve seen of late, this game seems poised to wind up falling short of the number.
