Old Dominion Monarchs (3-8) vs. South Alabama Jaguars (9-2)

Week 13 of the 2022 college football season brings the Sun Belt Conference showdown from Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile, Alabama, on Saturday, November 26, so here’s the best Old Dominion vs. South Alabama betting pick.

The Monarchs and Jaguars lock horns for the first time ever. The Jaguars are listed as 16-point home favorites, and the totals sit at 47.5 points.

Old Dominion’s free fall continues

The Old Dominion Monarchs (3-8; 4-7 ATS; 2-5 conf.) extended their losing streak to five games last Saturday. Playing as 16-point road underdogs, the Monarchs suffered a 27-14 defeat at the Appalachian State Mountaineers. At least, they covered the spread for the first time since Week 7 and a surprising 49-21 victory at the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.

App State outgained Old Dominion 498-394 in total yards, and the Monarchs trailed 27-0 at the end of the third quarter, scoring a couple of consolation touchdowns late in the fourth. Sophomore QB Hayden Wolff completed 22 of his 37 passing attempts for 308 yards and two touchdowns, while sophomore wideout Javon Harvey had four receptions for 133 yards and a pair of scores.

“We dug too big a hole in the first half,” Old Dominion coach Ricky Rahne said. “That’s the bottom line. We did not play very well in the first half in any phase. And in the second half, we did. Obviously, this is a 60-minute game for a reason.”

The Monarchs have mightily struggled offensive-wise as of late. They’ve only scored 34 points over the previous four weeks. During their losing streak, Hayden Wolf has thrown for five touchdowns and four interceptions, while junior RB Blake Watson has accounted for 189 rushing yards and zero scores over his previous four appearances.

Old Dominion ranks 116th in the nation in points scored (19.5 per game) and 125th in rushing yards (91.9). The Monarchs surrender 26.5 points per contest (tied-70th in the country) on 249.2 passing yards (101st) and 197.5 rushing yards (119th).

South Alabama eyes its fifth straight victory

The South Alabama Jaguars (9-2; 7-4 ATS; 6-1 conf.) outlasted the Southern Miss Golden Eagles 27-20 in Week 12. It was their fourth consecutive victory, but the Jaguars failed to cover a 7.5-point spread, putting an end to a three-game ATS win streak. South Alabama overcame a four-point deficit in the fourth quarter and outgained the Golden Eagles 411-298 in total yards.

Senior signal-caller Carter Bradley went 15-of-22 for 238 yards, three touchdowns, and a couple of interceptions against Southern Miss. Junior WR Devin Voisin had six catches for 97 yards and a touchdown, while freshman running back Braylon McReynolds posted 15 carries for 100 yards and three receptions for 66 yards.

"I'm certainly happy for our team to have responded the way that they did against Southern Miss,” South Alabama head coach Kane Wommack said. “It was by far not our best performance. I thought we played poorly in a number of areas, including ball security; it was one of our worst performances in terms of taking care of the football. You look at our early turnovers, a botched fake punt situation that never should have happened based off of that look, and some other things that put us in a tough situation to work out of and then on the flip side the thing I think I'm most happy with about our team is our ability to respond, no matter what adversity seems to come our way.

Carter Bradley has thrown for 2,786 yards, 22 touchdowns, and nine interceptions so far this season. Junior RB La’Damian Webb has 1,115 yards from scrimmage and 14 touchdowns on his season tally, but he sat out Week 12 due to a foot injury and is questionable to play against Old Dominion.

The Jaguars are scoring 32.4 points per game (37th in the nation) on 263.9 passing yards (also 37th) and 162.4 rushing yards (58th). They are giving up 19.4 points in a return (17th) on 209.1 passing yards (44th) and 87.0 rushing yards (5th).

The Jaguars have dominated their opponents by the line of scrimmage for most of the season, and I’m expecting more of the same in Week 13. South Alabama’s offensive line will torture the Monarchs, and Old Dominion will struggle to move the ball on the ground. Hereof, I’m laying points with the Jaguars even if La’Damian Webb remains on the sidelines. Braylon McReynolds played well against Southern Miss in his first career start, and the Jaguars seem to have enough weapons to roll over the fading Monarchs.

Old Dominion is 1-4 ATS in its last five games overall and 2-6 ATS in its previous eight contests played on Saturday. On the other side, the Jaguars are 8-4 ATS in their last 12 games overall and 5-1 ATS in their previous six home tilts played on Saturday. South Alabama is still alive in the race for a place in the Sun Belt championship game, but the Jaguars need the lowly Arkansas State to beat Troy at home.

Prediction: Take the South Alabama Jaguars -16.0 (-110)

I’ve mentioned the Monarchs’ offensive woes. Since dropping 49 points on Coastal Carolina, Old Dominion has scored 57 points through five outings. They’ll have another tall task in this matchup, so I’m going with the under, although the line has been set pretty low. If La’Damian Webb returns from an injury, the Jaguars could easily destroy the Monarchs.

The under is 5-0 in Old Dominion’s last five contests overall and 8-1 in its previous nine games against the Sun Belt Conference. The Monarchs will avoid a heavy loss only if their defense steps up and slow down the Jaguars’ ground game.

Prediction: Go under 47.5 points (-110)
