Florida International will try to snap a 10-game losing streak when it travels to Southern Miss for the final game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers have lost 10 straight games since opening the year with a win, losing eight of those games by double digits. Southern Miss has had an atrocious season as well, but it is coming off its second victory of the year.

Panthers coming off another blowout loss

FIU has been one of the worst teams in the FBS this season. It opened the year with a 48-10 win over Long Island, but it has been all downhill since then. The Panthers took Texas State to overtime in their second game and lost at Central Michigan by just four points in Week 4, but the rest of their losses have come by double digits. They have lost by at least 23 points in each of their last four games, including a 49-7 setback against North Texas last week. The market has made FIU a double-digit underdog in seven of its 10 losses, but the Panthers have only covered the spread twice.

Their offense is sitting at No. 98 in the FBS, averaging 360.4 yards per game. Quarterback Max Bortenschlager has completed just 51.9% of his passes for 2,704 yards and 18 touchdowns. He has thrown 10 interceptions and has been sacked 35 times. His top target in the passing game has been wide receiver Tyrese Chambers, who has caught 40 passes for 919 yards and eight touchdowns. Bryce Singleton has added 41 receptions for 772 yards and three scores. Running back D’Vonte Price leads the rushing attack with 129 carries for 682 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 5.3 yards per carry. He is questionable for this game with a lower-body injury. FIU will be facing a Southern Miss defense that is the strength of the team, ranked No. 46 in yards allowed per game (355.5).

Southern Miss favored for second time in 2021

Southern Miss comes into this game with slightly more momentum than FIU. The Golden Eagles only had one win going into last week’s game at Louisiana Tech, but they were able to spring a huge upset as 15.5-point underdogs. They took a 7-3 lead midway through the first quarter and never trailed again. It was an unexpected result for a Southern Miss team whose only other win was a 37-0 shutout against Grambling in Week 2. The Golden Eagles have now covered the spread in two straight games, as they easily stayed within 32.5 points in a 27-17 loss to UTSA two weeks ago.

Star running back Frank Gore Jr. was forced to take over at quarterback following an injury to its top three quarterbacks. Gore has rushed for 733 yards and three touchdowns this season, but he has now added six completions for 108 yards and two touchdowns. It has not been announced if Gore will be under center again on Saturday. Wide receiver Jason Brownlee has caught a team-high 41 receptions for 545 yards and six touchdowns. Wideout Jakarius Caston has added 15 catches for 226 yards. Southern Miss should have some success offensively regardless of who starts at quarterback, as it is facing an FIU defense that is No. 128, allowing 496.3 yards per game.

Insiders Status:

Southern Miss has not been favored since Week 2 of the season, so I certainly have no interest in trusting them to cover as double-digit favorites on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles pulled off an extremely improbable upset last week at Louisiana Tech, but I do not expect the same success if Gore Jr. is forced to start at quarterback again this week. He is an excellent player, but FIU will have more time to prepare for the wildcat look. The Panthers have had the same starter at quarterback all season, so they will have more cohesiveness offensively in this game. Southern Miss is 2-7 ATS in its last nine games.

Prediction: FIU +10.5

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

This could wind up being an extremely low-scoring game if Gore Jr. is forced to start at quarterback again on Saturday. He not only does not provide much of a passing threat, but it will also lead to a running clock for most of the game. The Golden Eagles have been heavily shaded to the under for most of the season, going under in 12 of their last 16 games dating back to last season. They have gone under in eight of their last 10 games in the month of November. I do not trust FIU’s offense to get this one over the total.

Prediction: Under 45.5
