Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (5-7) vs. Wyoming Cowboys (6-5)

Two teams looking to solidify a bowl position square off when the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors travel to take on the Wyoming Cowboys. Hawaii must win the sixth game to become bowl eligible. The Rainbow Warriors defeated Colorado State last Saturday, 50-45, snapping a three-game losing streak. Wyoming defeated Utah State 44-17 for their sixth victory of the season. The Rainbow Warriors are 1-4 ATS in their last five games while the Cowboys are 3-0 ATS in their last three games.

Wyoming enters as a 10.5-point favorite. The Coyotes won the most recent contest between these teams, defeating Hawaii 31-7 in October 2020. In the last four meetings, these teams are 2-2.

Rainbow Warriors Win Shootout with Rams

The Rainbow Warriors jumped out to a 29-10 lead at the half, then watched Colorado State put on a furious fourth-quarter surge, putting up 28 points before Hawaii was able to hold them off for the 50-45 victory. This was an exciting contest that saw these teams combine to put up nearly 1200 yards of offense, including 933 yards through the air. Surprisingly, there were 10 punts in the game.

Hawaii is 67th in the country in points per game at 28.0 and is 72nd in yards per game at 397.9. The Hawaii offense is led by a bruising ground attack, led by Dae Dae Hunter and Dedrick Parson. Hunter has rushed for 623 yards and three scores, averaging 6.4 yards per carry, while Parson has rushed for 574 yards and eight scores, averaging 5.4 yards per carry. Calvin Turner has 307 yards rushing and seven scores.

Chevan Cordeiro has done a solid job at the quarterback position, completing 54.7% of his passes for 2470 yards and 14 touchdowns. He will make mistakes at times, throwing 10 interceptions. The leading receiver is Nick Mardner, who has 44 catches for 885 yards and five TDs. Turner leads the team with 68 catches for 786 yards and four TDs.

The Rainbow Warriors are allowing 32.8 points per game, 109th in the country. The defense has 26 sacks, 14 interceptions, and 13 fumble recoveries, proving to be a big-play defense. They do give up a lot of yards but will make the big play at times. Khoury Bethley is one of the keys, making five interceptions, and is second on the team with 88 tackles. He also has four sacks and a fumble recovery. The leading tackler is Darius Muassau, who has 101 tackles and leads with six sacks.

Cowboys Roll Past Aggies

Wyoming and Utah State were tied at 14 coming out of the first quarter, but the Cowboys dominated from there, putting up 10 points in the second quarter and 17 in the third on their way to a 44-17 victory. Titus Swen led the way for Wyoming, carrying the ball just 15 times for 169 yards and two touchdowns, as the Cowboys rushed for 362 yards in the game.

Wyoming is 100th in the country, averaging 24.0 points per game, and they are 93rd in yards per game at 365.9. The Cowboys' offense is also led by a bruising ground attack. Xazavian Valladay is having an outstanding season, rushing for 942 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 5.3 yards per carry. Swen has rushed for 718 yards and six TDs, averaging 6.3 yards per carry.

Sean Chambers was the quarterback at the start of the season, but Levi Williams has taken over. Williams has completed 56.5% of his passes for 702 yards and seven touchdowns against five interceptions. The leading receiver is Isaiah Neyor with 36 catches for 713 yards and 10 TDs, an impressive 19.8 yards per catch average.

Wyoming is 28th in the country in points allowed per game at 21.1. The defense has recorded 19 sacks, nine interceptions, and six fumble recoveries. This is a very good group, led by Chad Muma who has 120 tackles, a sack, a fumble recovery, and three interceptions. Solomon Byrd and Victor Jones are tied for the team lead in sacks at 3.5.

There is going to be no surprise in what either of these teams wants to do. Both want to run the ball. The difference is that Hawaii is a little bit better in the passing game and, in a game like this, that may be exactly what they need. Wyoming does not get enough pressure on the opposing quarterback and does not generate enough interceptions to slow down a very good Rainbow Warriors offense or to take advantage of Cordeiro’s propensity to throw interceptions occasionally.

Wyoming has done a great job at controlling the passing game for opponents this season, allowing 164.3 yards per game, but they have also only allowed 169.4 rushing yards per game. Both of those numbers will be eclipsed by the Rainbow Warriors, as they can easily get a 260+ yard performance out of Cordeiro. I believe Wyoming wins this game, but they will not cover the spread.

Prediction: Take the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors at +10.5 (-110)

With all that being said, I am not expecting a shootout here. These Cowboys play exceptional defense, and they may give up some yards, but they are not going to be scored on at will. In fact, I expect them to hold Hawaii, a team that had been held to 23 combined points in the previous two games prior to their victory, to no more than 20 points in this contest.

Wyoming held 10 of 11 of their opponents to 24 points or fewer, so the Rainbow Warriors are going to have their work cut out for them. Meanwhile, Wyoming should have some success against a Rainbow Warriors team that creates turnovers, but makes mistakes and gives up points.

Take Wyoming to win, 24-20.
