The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders will head on the road to FAU Stadium on Saturday evening as they get set to conclude the Conference USA season with a battle versus the Florida Atlantic Owls.

Middle Tennessee comes into its regular season finale with a 5-6 overall record, including a 3-4 mark in Conference USA play. Meanwhile, Florida Atlantic also owns an identical 5-6 overall record, including a 3-4 mark in C-USA play.

Can the Owls close the season with a win on the road against Middle Tennessee on Saturday?

Blue Raiders can't complete comeback vs. ODU

Middle Tennessee came up short in a hard-fought 24-17 loss at home versus Old Dominion last weekend. Quarterback Nick Vattiato completed 31-of-45 passes for 281 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

The Blue Raiders got some bad news a few weeks ago when it was announced that starting quarterback Chase Cunningham would miss the remainder of the season with a lower leg injury. Since then, Middle Tennessee has entrusted a true freshman to take the first team reps and the results have been mixed through three games. Vattiato has completed 68.8 percent of his passes for 649 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions this season. However, the freshman has struggled to move the ball effectively downfield, averaging just 5.8 yards per attempt on the year.

On defense, Middle Tennessee has given up 26.6 points per game, 74th in the country. The Blue Raiders have also given up 363.3 yards of total offense per contest, good for 51st in the nation, including just 230.5 passing yards per game, 67th in the FBS.

Perry, Owls hoping to rebound at home versus MTSU

Florida Atlantic was trounced 52-17 on the road against Western Kentucky last weekend. Quarterback Nkosi Perry finished 19-of-28 passing for 213 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions for the Owls, who were outgained 608 to 301 in total offense in the loss.

Perry has put together an encouraging season under center for the Owls. The 6-foot-4 senior has completed 59.9 percent of his passes for 2,443 yards with 18 touchdowns and only six interceptions. Perry has also been excellent at home, where he has 11 touchdowns and no interceptions on the year.

On defense, the Owls have surrendered 25.6 points per game, 32nd in the nation. Florida Atlantic has also given up 414.0 yards of total offense per contest, good for 18th in the country, including just 160.4 rushing yards per game, 80th in the FBS.

It’s hard not to like FAU in this game. Both teams will be battling for bowl eligibility but the Blue Raiders are still reeling from the loss of their starting quarterback a few weeks ago. Meanwhile, Perry has been a different quarterback at home (11 TD, 0 INT) compared to on the road (7 TD, 6 INT) so far this season. With the Owls returning home following a pair of road games, look for the Owls to bounce back in a big way and snap their skid at home in this spot. Take FAU to cover the spread versus the Blue Raiders on Saturday.

Prediction: Florida Atlantic Owls 3.5

Full-Game Total Pick

Rating:

These two teams are projected for 47 points but that number might be hard to come by in this matchup. Since losing Cunningham to injury, MTSU has scored 21 points or fewer in two of its last three games. Meanwhile, the Owls have scored 17 points or fewer in three straight contests. While Nkosi Perry has performed better at home this season, he comes into this game struggling over his last three contests and will be up against an underrated Blue Raiders’ defense in this matchup. Take this game to stay under the projected total on Saturday.

Prediction: Under 47
