North Carolina Tar Heels (1-8, 0-6 ACC) vs. Pittsburgh Panthers (4-5, 2-3 ACC)
NCAA College Football: Thursday, November 9th, 7:30 pm EST
Line: Pittsburgh -10
North Carolina heads to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers in an ACC battle this Thursday. The Tar Heels are currently in the season from hell. After having several great years in a row, they are currently at 1-8 overall and 0-6 in the ACC. No one could have seen this coming. They have played some close games, but they have also gotten crushed in quite a few. Their most recent loss 24-19 to Miami was probably their best played game of the year.
The Panthers, meanwhile are coming off of two straight wins and have increased their overall record to 4-5 and are 2-3 in the ACC. They had lost five of six before their recent two-game winning streak and have looked like an entirely different team. They are in fifth place in the Coastal Division of the ACC, while North Carolina sits in last place in the Coastal.
Tar Heels hang tough
No, it wasn’t their first conference win of the year, but the Tar Heels did play tough football against the ranked Miami Hurricanes last Saturday. They lost 24-19, but were never out of reach of a victory and a few more plays could have won it for them. They had 252 yards tough the air versus a stingy Miami defense and 176 yards on the ground. The problem was they couldn’t put up touchdowns when they got the ball close.
As we know, there are no moral victories in football, so the reality is that the Tar Heels are still just 1-8 on the year, winless in the ACC, and are riding a six-game losing streak. Their lone win of the year was against Old Dominion. That’s hardly a win to hang your hat on, but it may well be the lone win the Tar Heels get this year.
Pitt wins 2nd straight
The Pitt Panthers have been up and down this year, but they are playing their best football of the year right now and have won two straight games coming into Thursday’s contest. They beat Duke 24-17 three weeks ago and then came back and beat Virginia 31-14 two weeks ago. They are coming off of a bye heading into Thursday’s game although it’s not much of an advantage as North Carolina is too.
In the win over Virginia, the star offensively was probably running back Darrin Hall. He carried the ball 25 yards for 111 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Ben Dinucci was just okay, throwing for less than 200 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Luckily, they may not have to have him at his best to beat this Tar Heel team.
The North Carolina Tar Heels are:
- 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall
- 1-4 ATS vs. teams with a losing record
- 1-7 ATS in their last 8 conference games
The Pittsburgh Panthers are:
- 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 following a bye week
- 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall
North Carolina is a shell of themselves and just hoping to get this season over with. The Panthers have been frisky and I think they will be more than that on Thursday, getting an easy win.
The Tar Heels offense has been anemic this year, and their defense has at least kept them close in a few games. I see the same on Thursday, and think this will be a low scoring game….
