ECU Pirates vs. SMU Mustangs

Where: Gerald J. Ford Stadium, Dallas, TX

When: Saturday, November 9, 12:00 PM. ET.

The SMU Mustangs will be trying to bounce back from their loss to Memphis when they take on the ECU Pirates on Saturday afternoon.

Pirates Trying To Snap Four-Game Losing Streak

The Pirates have struggled against conference opponents this season and are still looking for their first win against a conference team this season. The team almost pulled off an upset of Cincinnati in their last and will be trying to do the same against the Mustangs when they play on Saturday as they try to snap their four-game losing streak.

East Carolina hasn’t played well offensively this season, averaging 23.9 points per game. The team is coming off a 43 point performance against the Bearcats and will give themselves a chance to get the upset if they can drop 40 or more points on the Mustangs on Saturday.

The Pirates have a good passing attack, averaging 254 passing yards per game, which is 45th in the country. They are led by Holton Ahlers, who has thrown for 2,207 yards, 11 touchdowns, and eight interceptions so far.

Ahlers threw for a career-high 535 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception against the Bearcats and will need another big game to give his team a chance to pull off the upset.

Mustangs Going For Ninth Win In 10 Games

The Mustangs suffered their first loss of the season against the Memphis Tigers and have dropped to third place in the West Division of the American Conference. They will be trying to bounce back from the loss and move into second place in the standings ahead of their matchup against Navy, who currently lead the division.

Even though the Pirates expected to be an easy win, the Mustangs can’t afford to overlook them ahead of their matchup with Navy, if they do not want to get upset on Saturday.

SMU has done well offensively this season, averaging 43.6 points per game. They have moved the ball well through the air and on the ground, with the 11th ranked passing game in the country and the 40th ranked ground attack.

The Mustangs are led offensively by former Texas castoff Shane Buechele, who has blossomed in Dallas. Buechele has thrown for 2,781 yards, 23 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He threw for 456 yards and three touchdowns in their loss to Memphis.

SMU hasn’t played well on the defensive end, holding opponents to 30.7 points per game. They were worse in their last game, giving up 54 points to the Tigers, and have to do a significantly better job to avoid a loss to the Pirates.

Best Bets for this Game

Full-Game Side Bet

Insiders Status:

The Mustangs are coming off a tough loss to Memphis and will be out for blood when they face the Pirates. SMU has the advantage in this game because they have been great against the spread, winning five of their last seven home games, and have one of the best offenses in the country, averaging 43.6 points per game, going up against a defense that is giving up 30.2 points per game. The Mustangs won’t have any trouble moving the ball through the air or on the ground against the Pirates, whose defense rank near the bottom of FBS teams against the run and the pass. Even though the Mustangs are giving up 30.7 points per game, their defense will be able to hold off the Pirates, who average 23.9 points per game. The last time the two teams met, the Mustangs walked away with a 24 point win on the road. This time around, they will win the game by a larger margin, so pick them to cover the spread.

Prediction: SMU Mustangs -21

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

The Mustangs are averaging 43.6 points per game and will go off against a defense that is giving up 30.2 points per game. However, the Pirates will struggle to keep up offensively because they are averaging 23.9 points per game, and will fall short of their season average against the Mustangs, which will keep the final score under the total in this game.

Prediction: Under 71

Half-Time Side Pick

Insiders Status:

The Pirates will cover the first half spread because they have played well in the first half of their last three games, averaging 15.7 points per game while the Mustangs average 20.7 points per game. If they keep playing well in the first half, they should be able to keep the score close, making them the best bet here.

Prediction: East Carolina Pirates +13.5

Half-Time Total Bet

Insiders Status:

The Mustangs and Pirates are averaging 36.4 points per game in the first half of their last three games and will go over the first half total in this game if they maintain their current scoring pace.

Prediction: Over 36
