The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles will host the UAB Blazers in C-USA play Saturday afternoon from M.M. Roberts Stadium. The Blazers were crushed 30-7 at Tennessee last week, and the Golden Eagles tallied a 20-6 road win over Rice in their previous action on October 26th. The Blazers registered a 26-23 overtime home win against Southern Mississippi last season.
UAB's Three Game Winning Streak Ends in Loss to Tennessee
The UAB Blazers are still in contention for first place in the C-USA West. They are 3-1 in conference play while Louisiana Tech is just ahead with a 4-0 record. UAB is coming off a 30-7 road loss to Tennessee in non-conference play last week. Overall UAB is not a high scoring team. Tyler Johnston III has tossed at least one pick in all but one game. The sophomore QB has recorded 1899 passing yards with a 15:13 TD to INT ratio. He exited last week’s game against Tennessee and is listed as questionable. Johnston will likely be a game-time decision, but chances are good he plays.

UAB checks in at No. 5 nationally this week in total defense. 💯 pic.twitter.com/8qsBtzDmz1
The Blazers don’t have much of a running game. Their top rusher Spencer Brown was dealing with a leg injury but is expected to play. The junior back has tallied 262 yards, while Lucious Stanley is now at 269 yards. Look out for Austin Watkins in this one. The junior WR should find plenty of open field against a weak pass defense. Watkins has tallied over 120 receiving yards in two out of his last three games, and he has accrued a total of 689 yards. UAB’s offense will likely target the Southern Mississippi secondary heavily in this one.
The Blazers' defense is their greatest strength. There are no flaws in this defense. They rank sixth against the pass and 10th against the run. UAB is scoring an average of 27 points, ranking them 80th in the country. They are allowing an average of 17.5 points, positioning them 14th in the FBS. UAB stands at 2-2 on the road.
Southern Miss Defeats Rice, Improves to 3-1 in Conference Play
The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles are hunting for their fourth win in their last five games overall. The Golden Eagles can secure bowl eligibility with a win in this one. They feature a solid 3-1 C-USA record which included an easy 20-6 road win over Rice last week in a game that had Southern Miss. favored by 10 points. Jack Abraham hasn’t fared well recently, tossing five interceptions in his last two games. The junior QB had logged several big games this season, and he has collected 2470 passing yards with a 13:9 TD to INT ratio.
The Golden Eagles running game ranks near the bottom of the FBS in production. Their leading rusher Kevin Perkins only has 350 yards on the season. The junior RB is coming off a season-high 86 rushing yards in the win over Rice.
Quez Watkins could play a large factor in this game against a stifling defense. The junior WR is very difficult to contain, registering 697 receiving yards on the season. He has logged over 100 receiving yards in two out of his last three games. Southern Mississippi leans quite heavily on their passing game.
The Golden Eagles defense has been up and down. They are awful against the pass as they are placed down at 102nd in passing yards allowed and it will be a challenge against the Blazers strong passing offense. Southern Mississippi is 3-0 on their home field, and they are averaging 29.1 points on the season, ranking them 67th overall. They are allowing an average of 28.8 points, positioning them 78th in the FBS.
