No. 8 Delaware will be looking to stay unbeaten when it travels to Delaware State on Saturday night. The Blue Hens had last week’s game canceled, but they picked up a road win at Rhode Island their last time out. Both of Delaware State’s wins this spring have come against Howard and it enters this game as a big underdog.
Blue Hens feature second-best defense in FCSNo. 8 Delaware got off to an excellent start this spring when it picked up a 37-0 win against Maine in its opener. The Blue Hens followed that win with a 31-3 victory over Stony Brook before having their game against New Hampshire postponed. Their most recent outing resulted in a 35-21 win at Rhode Island two weeks ago. They were scheduled to face Albany last week, but the game was canceled. Delaware relies on a defense that ranks second in the FCS in total defense, giving up just 201.7 yards per game.
The Blue Hens have only given up 24 points in their three wins. Their offense has also been excellent, scoring in 13 straight quarters dating back to the 2019 season. They are undefeated in the previous nine meetings against Delaware State. Redshirt senior running back Dejoun Lee rushed for 221 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries against Rhode Island. Sophomore Chase McGowan led the defense with four tackles for a loss, including three sacks.
Hornets hoping to spring massive upsetDelaware State has played three games this spring, opening the slate with a 17-10 win at home against Howard. The Hornets followed that loss with a low-scoring 17-9 loss at South Carolina State. They were originally scheduled to face Howard again on March 27, but the game was pushed back a week. Delaware State grabbed a 37-28 road victory when the teams wound up playing last week. The Hornets never trailed after taking a 7-6 lead in the first quarter, clinching the contest with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns.

They rushed for 217 yards and a touchdown in the win. Quarterback Jared Lewis threw three touchdown passes to Trey Goss to complete the season sweep. Freshman running back Sy’veon Wilkerson rushed for a game-high 112 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. It was the biggest rushing output for Delaware State since the team tallied 249 against Norfolk State in 2019. The team also snapped a 34-game road losing streak with the win. They have won two of their first three games in a season for the first time since 2012.
Best Bets for this Game
Full-Game Side Bet
There is just a huge talent gap between these teams and it has shown throughout the series history. Delaware has won all of the previous meetings and has only allowed Delaware State to surpass 14 points twice in those games. This is one of the best teams that the Blue Hens have had in recent years and is the second-best defense in the FCS. I expect them to come out focused for a rivalry game and to outmatch the Hornets from start to finish. There could be an emotional letdown for Delaware State after finally snapping a lengthy road losing skid.
Full-Game Total Pick
It’s tough to expect much from Delaware State’s offense on Saturday night. The Hornets were unable to get anything going on that side of the ball against South Carolina State, which is the only competitive opponent it has faced this spring. This is going to be a huge step up in class, as Delaware is the best defense in the conference. Delaware State also relies on its rushing attack, which will help run the clock and lead to a lower-scoring game. I expect the Hornets to get outmatched, particularly on the offensive side of the field.
